Major League Baseball Stadiums Add Biometric Screening

FANS attending Braves, Athletics and Mariners baseball games will now get faster entry if they use CLEAR biometric kiosks as more stadiums add biometric screening to speed up congested arrival times.

Atlanta Braves’ SunTrust Park, Oakland Athletics’ Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum and Seattle Mariners’ Safeco Field have all implemented the CLEAR biometric identity platform, which is now used by 11 professional sports teams across the MLB, NBA and MLS.

“Sports venues are starting to look more and more like airports from a security and experience perspective,” says Lauren Stangel, CLEAR’s head of sports and events. “Baseball stadiums have 40,000 to 50,000 people entering through the gates almost 50 per cent of whom arrive between 15 minutes before the first pitch.”

CLEAR makes its stadium access available for free for those who sign up. Visitors can enrol in the program at participating stadiums.

The company says it plans to experiment this year in Washington state with biometric identification of fingertips that prove age verification for alcohol purchase and hopes at some point to use fingertip identification for stadium entry.

“We believe your identity should serve as your wallet and your ticket,” Stangel says.

During screening, users verify their identities by pressing a finger to a touch pad or looking into an iris scanner.
