iLOQ Upgrades Grade 3 S50 NFC Smart Padlock – iLOQ has expanded its battery-free S50 smart padlock range with the launch of an upgraded Grade 3 model designed for critical infrastructure applications.

The new Grade 3 S50 NFC Smart Padlock features improved mechanical robustness and introduces lock status reporting, allowing operators to determine whether individual padlocks are open or closed and synchronise that information with the iLOQ Manager platform using a smartphone. The company says upgraded Grade 4 and Grade 5 models will follow later in 2026, with a new Grade 1 version planned after that.

The S50 padlock range is aimed at operators of electricity, water, telecommunications and other critical infrastructure networks where thousands of locks may be deployed across widely dispersed sites.

Rather than relying solely on access events, the updated padlocks provide confirmation of lock status in the field, giving operators greater visibility of maintenance activities, site occupancy and potential security issues. Status information is collected using personnel’s smartphones and uploaded to a central management platform, providing a live overview of deployed locks.

Like the rest of the iLOQ S50 family, the new Grade 3 padlock requires no batteries or wiring. Instead, the lock harvests the small amount of electrical energy required to operate directly from the near field communication (NFC) field generated by a compatible smartphone or iLOQ key fob. The phone serves as both the user’s credential and the lock’s power source.

Because there are no batteries to replace, the padlocks are effectively maintenance free, eliminating routine battery replacement, reducing lifecycle costs and avoiding electronic waste associated with battery-powered locking systems.

The battery-free design also eliminates the need for a mechanical keyway, reducing attack surfaces while allowing access rights to be issued, updated or revoked digitally. Access permissions can be time restricted, lost credentials can be blocked without replacing locks, and every opening event can be recorded in an audit trail. Firmware updates are also supported without replacing the hardware.

According to iLOQ, the upgraded mechanical design incorporates improved plating and refinements intended to increase durability in exposed outdoor environments. The company says the locks are suited to remote infrastructure where exposure to dust, moisture and temperature extremes places high demands on physical hardware.

Existing S50 padlocks have an IP68 ingress protection rating, support AES-256 encryption with mutual authentication, store up to 210 access rights and 500 audit events, and are available with multiple shackle lengths.
