Construction will begin this year on an $A11 billion metro line linking the new Western Sydney airport and St Marys railway station, after $5.25 billion funding was injected by the Federal Government to match the funding from the NSW Government.

NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, who said the Federal Government’s funding announcement was “music to my ears”, pointed out that the project will create 14,000 jobs and will involve significant infrastructure of all kinds – this will include security and life safety solutions. It will include 6 metro railway stations, 2 of which will be within the airport’s boundaries, with new stations built at Luddenham and Orchard Hills as part of the project.

“Getting these big projects even more quickly is something we’ve been working together, states and territories and the Commonwealth,” Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said. “This is how Australia makes its way back out of the COVID-19 crisis, infrastructure projects like this one.”

The project includes an interchange at St Marys to link the line up with the existing suburban railway system. It currently takes about 50 minutes riding on existing rail to get from St Marys to Central Station in the CBD. The project, which is due for completion in 2026, will involve 6km more tunnelling than originally planned, and St Mary’s station will be relocated underground.
