ANZ Security Industry Mergers And Acquisitions Trending.
ANZ Security Industry Mergers And Acquisitions – Mergers, acquisitions driven by generational change are going to be a growing trend over the next couple of years.
As regular readers know, SEN keeps a close eye on security company sales and most of those we’ve covered in 2024 have been SMEs whose owners are reaching retirement age without an internal succession plan. Typically, owners are on-selling to moderately larger installation businesses, or to AV and automation providers seeking a bolt-on security business unit.
Many security installers have been in the industry since the 1980s and 90s – a handful have served the industry since the 1970s. One of the interesting things about getting older is realising that older people are not disconnected, are not luddites, have not lost their curiosity or enthusiasm. In many cases, their eyes are fixed intently on the horizon of technological possibility.
However, working life has limits and people in their mid-late 60s and older are going to be thinking about indulging other passions. That means ambitious young security people – including tight-knit middle management teams with some financial nous – are going to have real opportunities to buy in and to grow fast.

This generational change means manufacturers and distributors are going to need to build new relationships with new faces while undergoing a generational change of their own. It’s a mistake to think the industry is going to be swapping out Boomers for Gen Zs – the revolving door of generational and demographic change operates much more slowly than that. But the trend is notable.
Over the next few years, we are going to see many more mergers and acquisitions of famous old local companies still privately held – some of these potential sales we’ve had wind of on the QT. Personally, we’d like to think they won’t all go to OS ownership, but business is business and in a competitive market like the electronic security industry some rationalisation is inevitable.
It’s worth pointing out that if ownership does go OS, attempting remote management can be a bit like watchmaking wearing oven mitts. In the fast-changing tech-based security industry big players with slow reactions are going to create space for aggressive young locals with fire in their bellies and strong relationships with peers, suppliers and customers.
