Duress App Mobile Safety Solution – Duress App, which we first met at SecTech NZ, is a mobile safety solution designed for lone workers and teams operating in isolated or high-risk environments.
Part of a suite of solutions from Duress, the Duress app transforms smartphones into 24/7 personal safety devices, providing live monitoring, emergency alerting, and team communication tools. Once activated, the app streams live video, audio, and location data to a 24/7 emergency monitoring centre, which can verify incidents and request emergency services. Updates are transmitted every 5 seconds, ensuring accurate real-time location tracking.
The app operates on iOS (11+) and Android (5+), requiring no additional hardware, and offering a quick and low-cost deployment model. Users are onboarded via email, and the software is accessible instantly. Emergency alerts can also notify nominated contacts through notifications and SMS. Internal alerts and the ‘Team Assist’ functions allow workers to request help from supervisors or teammates with GPS-tracked updates for improved coordination.
Check-in functions include safety timers that trigger alerts when deadlines expire. Duress App Auto Check-In uses geolocation to start timers automatically at nominated sites, raising alerts if a worker remains on site too long. Combined with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacon compatibility for indoor tracking, this system provides room-level accuracy.
The app pairs with the Duress Phoenix device for remote operation. This compact, credit card-sized wearable allows activation up to 10m away from the user’s phone. The Phoenix Series 2 offers a screen for status updates, alert confirmations, and cancellation functions, and it features a 12-month battery life with automatic power management.
According to Duress, security and privacy are core to the platform. The app does not track user locations outside of declared emergencies. All transmissions are encrypted in transit and at rest, and data is stored securely within Australia. The Duress system is ISO27001 certified, with vetted staff and strict access controls. Importantly, administrators cannot track users without an active alert.
The system is managed via the Pathfinder dashboard, which allows admin users to oversee team activity, alerts, and configuration, while training is provided during onboarding and supported by an online knowledge base and local support.
