ICT Secures City Of Parramatta – City of Parramatta has consolidated security, building automation and public facility bookings into a single Protege GX platform, marking a major shift in the way its security operations are managed across 110 sites.
The decision followed years of fragmented systems, manual processes and limited integration capability as the city expanded its public facilities footprint during a period of significant growth.
Council manages a diverse security network installed in office buildings, libraries, community centres, childcare centres, aquatic centres and sporting clubs. More than 3500 users – staff, contractors and members of the public – interact with these facilities daily.
Meanwhile, maintaining a 24/7 security operations centre in the Parramatta CBD required a unified platform capable of handling alarms, access control, subsystem integrations and public amenity bookings at scale.
Following a review, the council selected ICT’s Protege GX as a centralised system for access control and alarms, with direct integration to existing subsystems including lighting, HVAC, fire systems and CCTV.
“Our success in security management is largely due to the strong and reliable partnership with ICT,” says Mo Al Salemi, security platform specialist at City of Parramatta.
“As well as doing everything we need right now, like handle access and alarms across all locations when we look at our future security systems strategy, Protege GX has all the integrations and lets us expand as required.”
The system also supports building lockdown capability during emergencies, with all actions monitored and controlled from the council’s security operations centre.
“Our core operation, everything we have, integrates with Protege GX – that is our foundation,” Al Salemi says. “We integrate all the fire alarms into the security system and in case of emergency we’re able to lock down our whole building with one click of a button.”
A key challenge for council was managing bookings for public facilities such as meeting rooms, community centres and sports clubs. Parramatta integrated its booking platform, Bookable, directly with Protege GX to automate access.
“We use a custom integration between Bookable and Protege GX across all our hirable sites,” Al Salemi says. “Once Protege has accepted the booking, it generates a 6-digit PIN, and the user will get an email within 45 seconds confirming the details.”
The security operations centre also benefits from custom floor plans and alarm pop-ups within the Protege GX dashboard.
“As we have over 110 sites, we can’t expect all our control room operators to have first-hand knowledge everywhere,” Al Salami says.
“We have visual floor plans on the Protege GX dashboard to help them to understand the layout of all the facilities.”
This allows operators to review alarm information, check the status of devices and call up live video when required.
Subsystem integrations extend to energy management, automating lighting, HVAC, hot water and AV equipment according to booking schedules.
“As soon as you enter a valid credential, the doors open, the lights, air-con, and all other systems such as hot water and AV turn on,” Al Salemi says. “We’ve programmed things in the back end… and of course the alarms automatically arm at the end too.”
The deployment was delivered in close collaboration with ICT to minimise disruption.
“The support from ICT has been invaluable in maintaining seamless system operations across all our sites,” he explains. Ongoing training and vendor support remain central to the city’s ability to operate at scale. “We have a great partnership with ICT, from vendor support to sales support.”
