♦ Intel Onshores Semiconductors – Intel is building a pair of $US20 billion semiconductor factories in the U.S. as part of a process of onshoring its atomic-level ‘Angstrom era’ chip making capabilities.

The massive facility at Licking County Ohio will create 20,000 jobs, including 7000 in construction, and tens of thousands in support, with the project likely to increase Ohio’s GDP by $3 billion.

“We are excited to call Ohio home to Intel’s first new manufacturing site in 40 years,” said Pat Gelsinger, Intel CEO. “Today, we take an important step toward our goal to rebalance global chipmaking capacity and help boost production to meet the surging demand for advanced semiconductors, powering a new generation of innovative products.

“The new factories we’ll build in Ohio are part of our strategy to increase semiconductor R&D and global manufacturing capacity and restore U.S. semi manufacturing leadership. We expect Intel Ohio will become one of the largest semiconductor manufacturing sites in the world over the next decade.”

In 1990, the United States was a world leader in chip production, dominating nearly 40 per cent of the world’s production capacity. In 2020, the U.S. share fell to only 12 percent and is projected to slide to just 10 percent by 2030 if the country does not act.

The confluence of geopolitical tensions and pandemic disruptions has highlighted the downside of decades of offshoring chip manufacture, stagnating innovation and leaving the U.S. vulnerable to supply chain disruptions.
