Is Private Security The Future Of Street Policing As Political Commitment To Law Enforcement Weakens?

Is Private Security The Future Of Street Policing – Established in 2016 with a mission to create safer communities, My Local Bobby is a UK-based security company which actively patrols neighbourhood streets, makes arrests and prosecutes crimes.

The company’s growth is driven in considerable part by gangs of burglars that are so confident in non-existent police response that they will break into homes in broad daylight or rob retailers with complete impunity.

While ANZ’s situation is not so parlous, the situation in parts of NZ, one of the world’s fastest-growing markets for retail fog cannons, as well as parts of Australia, is just as lawless, if not worse.

Launching in Chigwell, Essex, My Local Bobby says its first beat laid the foundation for future operations. By working closely with local stakeholders, the company says it transformed the neighbourhood into a safer place.

My Local Bobby now manages 18 residential beats, 13 Public Realm Beats, and a variety of guarding assignments for prestigious clients, including McDonald’s, Pandora, Dunelm, Arc’teryx, Aspinal, SALT, Trinny London, and the Bank of Egypt.

The team has expanded to include over 100 fully SIA-qualified bobbies, 8 detectives as part of the company’s Prolific Crimes Team, and a dedicated operations team. The combined operation is supported by a fleet of 20 patrol vehicles and 2 area cars.

What’s interesting about the street-based element of the My Local Bobby service is that communities feeling abandoned by the Metropolitan Police are turning to a private security firm that isn’t just proactive with patrols, but proactive with prosecutions.

It’s not an inexpensive service but it’s affordable when you consider performance vectors. For a monthly fee of £100 per home in a neighbourhood, My Local Bobby teams patrols lanes and back alleys in vehicles and on foot, pick up family members from railway stations or bus stops, and offer a 30-second response to local break-ins.

If that’s not enough, backing up the security service is an investigations and prosecutions team that privately prosecutes criminals through the courts with a conviction rate of 100 per cent, which leaves the Met’s pathetic prosecution rate in the dust.

While growth in the security industry is great to see, this sort of growth is more troubling. Will weakening appetite to uphold the law see public faith in law enforcement and the courts continue to erode in Australia and New Zealand? If so, it’s highly likely we will see services like My Local Bobby offered here.
