Milestone Systems 2025 R3 Smarter, More Connected – XProtect 2025 R3, released in last month, brings a mix of practical improvements and forward-looking features to make life easier for installers, integrators, and operators.

According to Mark Shannon, national product manager at BGW Technologies, this release is all about tightening up system management, strengthening access control, and improving the way mobile and cloud-based users interact with their video systems.

“R3 is one of those updates where you can tell Milestone has been listening to installers,” Shannon says. “The improvements are focused, meaningful, and designed to streamline everyday work.”

One of the key additions in 2025 R3 is the introduction of role-based Access Control Units (ACUs).

“Security and access control got a solid upgrade in R3,” Shannon explains. “The improved video-permissions control makes it much easier for site owners to decide exactly who can see what, and because role-based access control now extends into integrated access-control systems, you can manage video and access from the same interface. This means no more juggling different logins or trying to keep 2 permission sets in sync, it’s all centralised, and it’s a big win for installers and end-users.”

Installers can also now import or create ACU groups, assign permissions more efficiently, and reduce overall configuration complexity. This also helps eliminate the need for separate access-control logins, streamlining operations across larger or multi-user sites.

R3 also expands the capabilities of the Milestone Integration Platform (MIP) SDK.

The MIP SDK now supports MJPEG and H.265 video streams in WebRTC,” Shannon says. “On top of that, it’s got new RESTful APIs for accessing video, managing access groups, and automating device controls. It’s a much cleaner integration experience and makes third-party development far more flexible.”

The AI Bridge has received 2 updates, including versions 2.0.1 and 2.0.2, introducing a dedicated AI Bridge role within the XProtect Processing Server Admin Plugin.

“This makes it quicker and easier for administrators to assign the right permissions for AI workflows,” Shannon explains. “It’s all about simplifying setup, increasing security and making AI deployments more accessible.”

R3 brings several usability improvements to mobile clients too.

“There’s now Care status and reminders built right into the Milestone app,” Shannon explains. “Users can see when their Care subscription expires, what features they might lose, and how to renew. This is vital for preventing surprises – especially around things like push notifications.”

“Another welcome addition is the Mobile Default View option. This is one of those features that saves operators time every single day. You pick the view you use most, mark it with the star icon, and it opens automatically when you connect. Less clicking, less navigating and quicker response during critical situations.

“Milestone has also expanded its Mobile Client Beta Program to include iOS. Android users have had access to beta testing for a while, but now iOS users can jump in too,” Shannon explains. “It’s a great way to see what’s coming, test new features early, and provide feedback directly to Milestone.”

According to Shannon, additional updates have also been made the Milestone Remote Manager.

“This is one I’m personally excited about because it gives installers and operators a simple, centralised way to keep an eye on system health without needing to be on-site,” he says.

“You can monitor recording servers, cameras, services – the whole stack – from one interface. If a database fills up or a server begins to struggle, Remote Manager sends event-based notifications and customisable email alerts. This means you stay ahead of issues before they affect the customer – there are fewer urgent callouts and a smoother support experience all round.”

“For installers and integrators, the message is simple,” Shannon says. “XProtect 2025 R3 brings real, practical improvements that speed up deployment, strengthen security, and make the user experience smoother.”
