New AXIS Q9227-SLV Corner Camera – Axis Communications has released the AXIS Q9227-SLV corner camera, a compact, ligature-resistant device that combines AI analytics, integrated lighting, and 2-way audio in a form factor designed for custodial and clinical environments.
The camera integrates a deep learning processing unit with a hidden speaker and microphone, supported by both invisible IR and white LED illumination, allowing it to operate as an active safety and communication device rather than passive surveillance.
The Q9227-SLV is designed for installation in prison cells, psychiatric wards, and similar high-risk spaces where occupant safety, durability, and privacy must be balanced. Its anti-ligature corner design removes attachment points and eliminates blind spots, while the housing is rated IK11 for impact resistance and IP66, IP69, and IP6K9K for resistance to water, dust, and aggressive cleaning. The stainless-steel construction is intended to withstand repeated cleaning with detergents or graffiti removers and can be repainted where required.
Video performance centres on a 5MP sensor delivering up to 2880 x 2160 pixels of resolution at 30fps. A fixed 3.7mm lens provides a wide field of view of 115 degrees horizontal and 89.2 degrees vertical, covering a room from a single corner position. Lightfinder 2.0 and Forensic WDR support usable colour imaging down to 0.06 lux, while 940nm invisible IR illumination enables monitoring in total darkness without a visible glow that could disturb or provoke occupants. A white LED can be activated to provide colour detail when required, supporting incident review and evidentiary use.
AI capability is handled on the edge by the integrated DLPU. AXIS Object Analytics and AXIS Audio Analytics are preinstalled, allowing the camera to detect, classify, track, and count people while also responding to sound-based events such as screams, shouts, coughing fits, and sudden changes in sound level. This combination enables event detection even when visual cues are limited or absent. AXIS Live Privacy Shield is also preinstalled, providing AI-based dynamic masking to protect privacy while maintaining situational awareness.
Audio is a core element of the Q9227-SLV design. A concealed speaker and microphone with an on off switch and voice enhancer support clear 2-way communication between staff and occupants. This allows operators to issue instructions, de-escalate situations, or check welfare remotely without entering the room. Audio and video can be recorded together, with alarm inputs and outputs supporting integration into wider security and safety workflows.
Cybersecurity is addressed through Axis Edge Vault, a hardware-based security platform that protects device identity and sensitive information. The camera supports secure boot, signed firmware, HTTPS encryption, IEEE 802.1X network authentication, and FIPS 140-3 Level 3 certified cryptographic key storage and operations. Video compression uses Axis Zipstream with H.264 and H.265 to reduce bandwidth and storage requirements without compromising forensic detail.
The Q9227-SLV supports PoE Class 3, local storage via memory card, digital pan and tilt, digital zoom, and ONVIF Profile G for system interoperability. Operating temperature is rated from -20 to 50 degrees Celsius. Variants are available in white or steel finish to suit different environments.
