CSIRO New Norcia Deep Space Station Tender Seeks Security Services.
New Norcia Deep Space Station Tender – CSIRO has floated a future tender seeking security services for New Norcia Deep Space Station.
The services sought are non-specific and may cover alarm monitoring and on-site security services, or may involve upgrade of electronic security solutions, including access control, alarms and CCTV, given the station has been operational since 2003.
Located 130 kilometres north-east of Perth in Western Australia, the New Norcia ground station is one of 3 deep space stations in the European Space Agency (ESA)’s tracking station network; the other 2 are located in Cebreros, Spain and in Malargüe, Argentina.
The New Norcia site incorporates a 35-metre antenna at the station, DSA-1, that provides support to ESA’s missions exploring the Solar System and observe the galaxy and universe. The facility tracks the locations of celestial bodies, sends control commands, and receives scientific data gathered hundreds of millions of kilometres from Earth.
The site’s smaller 4.5-m diameter antenna, NNO-2, allows the New Norcia station to provide critical tracking services for Ariane, Soyuz and Vega launchers lifting off from Europe’s Spaceport at Kourou, French Guiana. Meanwhile, a 4th deep space antenna was installed in 2024 to support upcoming missions, including JUICE and Hera.
CSIRO has been responsible for day-to-day operational support and maintenance at the station since June 2019. Australia and ESA have had treaties in place since 1979 to enable ESA ground stations on Australian soil to track spacecraft and interplanetary missions.
This New Norcia Deep Space Station Tender for security services is expected to release on March 31 – you keep an eye out here or read more SEN news here.
