Palgate Spider Wireless Access Controller – Palgate Spider is a compact mobile access controller designed to control gates, doors, lighting circuits and auxiliary plants, such as water pumps, using cellular and Bluetooth connectivity.
While the Spider range includes multiple variants, the core platform and app experience are consistent across the family. At its core, Spider is a relay-based controller that operates over 3G or 4G mobile networks with Bluetooth used for local commissioning and proximity access.
The device drives a mechanical relay rated to a maximum load of 60V DC at 900mA, making it suitable for triggering gate operators, door strikes, lighting contactors or pump control circuits rather than powering loads directly.
Current consumption is low, with a draw of only around 3mA added when the relay is active, making Palgate ideal for solar-powered gate systems. Palgate recommends powering the unit from a 12V DC 1A supply, though the controller supports a 12V to 24V DC input range. Physically, the Spider is compact at 50mm by 70mm and rated for operation between -20C and 70C.
The strength of the Palgate Spider is not the hardware alone but the cloud and app ecosystem that sits above it. All core interaction happens through the free Palgate mobile app and browser-based portal. Users can open gates by proximity, app command, dial-in call, Siri, Google Assistant, Apple Watch, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Opening distance can be tuned to suit site layout, which is particularly useful in vehicle access scenarios where premature activation needs to be avoided.
User numbers are effectively unlimited on most Spider models, with support for up to 4000 smart remote controls where required. Access can be scheduled using a full 365-day calendar that includes public holidays, custom opening and closing rules, and an astronomical clock that follows sunrise and sunset. This makes the Spider equally useful for remote gates and for automated lighting control without external timers.
The web portal and app provide real-time status, logs and alerts. Events can generate push notifications, emails, SMS or API calls, and logs can be exported or imported using Excel files. Relay pulse width is programmable, and input relays can be used for feedback, alarms or vehicle detectors depending on the variant deployed. For multi-site operators, Palgate’s control room view allows multiple gates to be monitored and controlled from a single dashboard.
Connectivity is handled via a managed SIM arrangement with automatic billing and renewals, which removes much of the friction typically associated with cellular access control devices. Importantly, the Spider remains a simple relay controller at heart, which avoids vendor lock-in at the field device level and keeps integration straightforward.
