Tasmanian Security Officers Protected As Frontline Workers.

Tasmanian Security Officers Protected — Tasmanian frontline workers will now have stronger protections from assault following the passing of the Sentencing Amendment Bill 2024 through the Legislative Council late last year.

Recognising the vital work frontline workers do for the community, Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett, said the passing of the bill sends a strong message that any assault on a frontline worker is unacceptable, and will not be tolerated in Tasmania.

Under the new laws, anyone who assaults a frontline worker – be it child safety officer, correctional services officer, fire officer, paramedic, security officer, health worker and more – will face a minimum sentence of 6 months imprisonment for assaults and other offences causing serious bodily harm.

In its March 2024 submission to the Tasmanian Government, ASIAL urged the inclusion of security officers as frontline workers.

“Advocacy for the recognition of security officers as frontline workers has been a focus of ASIAL’s over the past 12 months,” said ASIAL president John Gellel.

“Tasmania now joins the Commonwealth Government in recognising security officers as frontline workers.”
