U.S. Customs and Border Protection has backed away from its proposal that all U.S. citizens participate in mandatory facial recognition entry/exit programmes.

Customs & Border Protection is testing facial recognition at more than 20 airports, seaports and border crossings. Airlines are using the face recognition algorithm as part of the boarding process by matching CCTV images against passenger photos.

“There are no current plans to require U.S. citizens to provide photographs upon entry and exit from the United States,” a CBP spokesperson said in a statement. “CBP intends to have the planned regulatory action regarding U.S. citizens removed from the unified agenda next time it is published.”

The reversal came after a meeting between the agency, privacy advocates and members of U.S. Congress.
