Detection, Prevention, Prediction Future Of Video Surveillance, Says Dahua’s Joe De Martino.
Detection, Prevention, Prediction Future Of Video Surveillance – According to Dahua’s Joe De Martino, the future of video surveillance revolves around detection, prevention and prediction, changes that will make CCTV proactive rather than reactive.
De Martino’s observations ring true. It’s not just that there’s a trend towards liberating the information inherent in video streams by manufacturers – there’s a growing appetite among users to interpret events, not simply record them.
According to De Martino, who is training and solution specialist at Dahua Technology Australia, that shift starts with detection, and he points out that “detection is no longer about what moves, but about what matters”.
This observation is much deeper than it first appears. It highlights the power of the latest video analytics to go further than mere line crossings or direction of travel observations and instead to deliver operators, security officers and security managers specific incidents they need to see.
According to De Martino, Dahua sees modern detection as being based on visual intelligence rather than rule-based triggers, with systems able to filter out irrelevant activity and focus on meaningful events. Technologies like Xinghan visual modes are part of that ability, being designed to offer improved performance in complex scenes with variable lighting and crowds.
“There is also a continued move towards edge processing, with analytics handled at the device level to reduce latency and reliance on central infrastructure,” De Martino explains.
The next layer is what Dahua describes as prevention. According to De Martino, this is less about identifying an event and more about understanding context – what is happening and whether it requires intervention. This distinction is at once vital and delicate. There’s a governance burden in missing events as well as detecting them.
“If detection answers what is happening, prevention answers why it matters,” De Martino says.
Tools like WizSeek are positioned around this idea, using natural language interaction to allow operators to query video and retrieve events without needing to navigate traditional search workflows. The intent is to reduce time spent reviewing footage and focus attention on incidents that require action.

In practical terms, this element of the process is about reducing nuisance alarms, identifying patterns of behaviour and presenting information in a way that supports faster decision-making.
The final stage Dahua points to is prediction, where systems begin to use historical data and real-time inputs to anticipate events rather than respond to them, allowing early warning.
“Prediction represents the next frontier of AI in video surveillance and the most transformative,” De Martino explains.
According to De Martino, this includes identifying abnormal behaviour early, anticipating crowd movement and highlighting potential vulnerabilities before they result in incidents.
“The idea is not to replace operators but to support them with additional context,” says De Martino.
There’s also a recognition that as systems become more capable, expectations around transparency and privacy will increase.
“As AI capabilities expand, so does the responsibility to deploy them ethically and transparently,” he says.
Dahua has been developing AI CCTV solutions since before 2019, and its latest functionalities are highly evolved just as the market’s appetite for video analytics becomes widespread.
