Teledyne FLIR Releases 1280 x 1024 Pixel Boson SX8 8-Micron Thermal Camera Module.
Teledyne FLIR Releases 1280 x 1024 Pixel Boson SX8 – Teledyne FLIR OEM has released the Boson SX8, an uncooled longwave infrared (LWIR) thermal camera module combining 8-micron pixel pitch with SXGA resolution in a compact form factor.
The Boson SX8 is described as the first NDAA-compliant, volume production LWIR module to deliver 1280 x 1024 resolution using an 8µm pixel architecture. The smaller pixel size reduces pixel area by around 55 per cent compared to the more common 12µm format, enabling higher resolution imaging without increasing module size.
At a system level, the result is a 4-fold increase in resolution compared with standard VGA (640 x 512) thermal modules, while maintaining similar size, weight and power characteristics.
The module is designed for applications where SWaP constraints are critical, including uncrewed aircraft systems, counter-UAS, perimeter security, handheld devices and ISR platforms. The higher pixel density supports improved detection range and situational awareness without the need to move to larger, cooled mid-wave infrared systems.
According to Teledyne FLIR OEM president Paul Clayton, the shift to 8µm pixels represents a change in how performance can be delivered in uncooled thermal imaging.
“By reducing pixel area by 55 per cent compared to the standard 12-micron LWIR pixel format, Boson SX8 represents a transformational moment for thermal imaging,” Clayton said.
“By pairing this advanced 8-micron pixel architecture with SXGA thermal resolution at full-rate production, we’re giving customers greater situational awareness and longer effective range without compromising SWaP or supply-chain confidence.”
Alongside fixed lens configurations, the Boson SX8-CZ 15–75 variant incorporates a factory-integrated 5x continuous zoom lens. The 15–75mm optical system is calibrated as a single unit with the sensor, supporting focus-through-zoom, thermal gradient compensation and factory alignment.
