Knightscope & Velodyne Lidar Partner On Autonomous Security Robots

Knightscope will use Velodyne Lidar technology in the 5th generation of its autonomous security robots.

Knightscope’s ASR solution is powered by Velodyne’s Puck lidar sensor, which provides reliability, energy efficiency and a full 360-degree environmental view to deliver highly accurate real-time 3D data. The versatile, compact Puck sensor is an ideal solution to enable safe navigation in a wide variety of environmental and lighting conditions.

Lidar is an acronym for light detection and ranging. It is sometimes called laser scanning or 3D scanning and the technology has a range of potential electronic security uses. Lidar employs eye-safe laser beams to create a 3D representation of the surveyed environment.

A typical lidar sensor emits pulsed light waves, which bounce off surrounding objects and return to the sensor. The sensor uses the time it took for each pulse to return to the sensor to calculate the distance it travelled. Repeating this process millions of times per second creates a precise, real-time 3D map of the environment – an onboard computer can utilize this map for safe navigation.

“As Knightscope has scaled across the country, we’ve utilized Velodyne’s technology on our 3rd and 4th generation machines, and we are proud to announce that our upcoming 5th generation ASRs will continue the long-standing relationship,” said William Santana Li of Knightscope.
