NSW’s double COVID-19 vaccination rate has just passed 55 per cent and is poised for massive acceleration as the early birds of the state’s 83.4 per cent first jabs return for their second dose.
There’s been some latency in the fully vaxed numbers as millions of NSW residents waited out their 3-8 week stints between jabs, but for that waiting time has passed and vaccination centres are now shifting from primarily first doses to primarily second doses.
In some council areas Sydney’s first jab rate has crossed 95 per cent and the massive and rapid take up of vaccination means the state looks set to negotiate its way out of lockdown mid-October, which is slightly ahead of schedule.
Importantly, ACT, Victoria and Queensland rates are either in lockstep or rapidly ramping up and SEN‘s contacts in healthcare suggest despite naysayers, public support for the vaccination programme has been so overwhelming Australia will overshoot its 80 per cent targets by a considerable margin – they suggest NSW will hit 90 per cent first dose by October 1, if not sooner.
Post-lockdown will still mean masking, social distancing and hygiene, as well as contact tracing and low touch – vaccination is not infallible – but anything that gets us out of this bloody 5km lockdown radius (and reopens those hallowed primary schools) we are prepared to tolerate.
