Face Recognition Car Entry Released.

Face Recognition Car Entry – In a move that highlights the growing momentum of facial recognition technology, American car maker Continental has included a trinamiX access control system on a car at the CES 2024 Expo.

The system includes an external display and biometric camera on the outside and inside of the car for face authentication and liveness detection, which opens and starts the car automatically for authorized drivers.

The vehicle’s interior camera is located behind the driver display console, and the exterior camera for facial authentication and keyless entry is mounted in the vehicle’s B-pillar. The biometric authentication system from BASF subsidiary trinamaX can recognize real skin, which adds liveness detection against use of masks and AI deepfakes.

Having 2 camera locations means every member of a family can open a car, but only a verified adult can start the ignition via face recognition car entry.

Wilfried Hermes, director of consumer electronics for North America and Europe at trinamiX, said the integration of the company’s biometric face authentication system “ensures the highest security standards in both the exterior and interior.”

“Together with Continental, we are improving existing driver monitoring systems and thus ensuring better interaction between the driver and the vehicle,” Hermes said.

According to Dr. Boris Mergell, head of the user experience for Continental Automotive, said the leap from inside to out was inevitable for automotive technology.

“Transferring our technologies from the interior to the exterior is a logical next step if this allows us to incorporate additional safety aspects and convenience functions,” he said.

The key takeaway for security people from the use of facial recognition by a growing list of companies and government agencies for a broad range of reasons, including convenience and cyber security, is that it further validates FIDO2 authentication standards.

The FIDO Alliance developed FIDO Authentication standards based on public key cryptography for authentication that is more secure than passwords and SMS OTPs, simpler for consumers to use, and easier for service providers to deploy and manage. FIDO Authentication enables password-only logins to be replaced with secure and fast login experiences across websites, apps and cars…
