Fence Disturbance Sensor Installation

♦ Fence Disturbance Sensor Installation – how should perimeter fences be set up to when they are to be supported by fence disturbance sensors?

A: Some basic rules apply when it comes to fence disturbance sensors – getting this right is going to involve including the fence installation team – that’s not likely to be your team and the fence crew may have ideas of their own.

Fundamentally, you want the fence structure and the fence fabric to be taut, with posts anchored in concrete on stable ground away from sources of vibration, including busy roadways and machinery.

If you must have signage on the fence, ensure that it is made of rigid plastic, firmly fixed and not too large. Firm fixing applies to the sensing devices and associated cabling, too. Strong wind can generate unexpected forces on cabling and the last thing you want is to create vibration or tapping of system loose components.

It’s best to anchor the bottom of the mesh to the ground using strong anchor points bedded deep – the idea is that the ground provides an additional line of stability. Any gate posts need to be solid, well anchored and properly balanced, so they won’t disturb the fence in operation, or when subject to wind pressure.

A key element of any fence disturbance sensing solution is that the fence be properly maintained, with any stretch tuned out of the structure to ensure predictable performance. Maintenance also applies to the ground on either side of the fence. Bushes, trees, grass all need to be kept under control via a maintenance program.
