Security & Government Expo, to be held at the Realm Hotel Canberra next Thursday, November 12 (pre-register here), includes the ASIS ACT Seminars, which once again include an excellent line-up of speakers.
The Seminar Programme Include the following sessions:
* Seminar speaker 1, Geoffrey Askew, AM, Principal, Askew & Associates, and former Senior Executive (Security and Emergency Management), QANTAS Group, who will speak on “Rethinking Australian Aviation Security Management and Funding” at 10am in the seminar area.
* Speaker 2, Julian Talbot, ASM, co-author, Security Risk Management Body of Knowledge (SRMBoK), who will speak on “Enterprise Security Risk Management” at 11am.
Julian’s presentation will address:
* What is an ESRA?
* How do I manage security at the enterprise level?
* What are the four processes?
* How long does it take to assess enterprise security risks and how much does it cost?
* What outcomes can I expect?
* Speaker 3, Keynote Address by Major General Dr Marcus Thompson, AM, Head, Information Warfare Division, Australian Defence Force in the main Expo Hall at 12 noon. Major General Thompson will share his experiences and challenges in a speech titled ‘Towards ADF Information Warfare – four years of growth’.
* Speaker 4, Raymond Frangie, CISA, CISSP, cybersecurity expert, who will speak on “Smart Buildings: Cybersecurity Threat or Opportunity” at 2pm.
* Speaker 5, Nicky Finn, agency security adviser, National Indigenous Australians Agency, who will speak on “The role of Agency Security Advisers, Accrediting and Certifying Authorities” at 3pm. Nicky’s presentation will set out the roles and responsibilities involved in gaining certification and accreditation for Australian Government compliant secure zones, as set out in the Protective Security Policy Framework, related guidance and standards.
* Speaker 6, Scott Taylor, CPP, JP, chief operating officer, Southern Cross Group, and NSW ASIS Chapter Chairman, who will speak on “Defeating Access Controls Using Social Engineering” at 4pm in the main Expo Hall.
The seminar format will be presentations on the hour every hour from 10am (except lunch break at 1pm) for 30 minutes, with up to 15 minutes for questions, then a 15-minute break until the next speaker. Refreshments for visitors starting at 3.30pm will be available within the expo area as well as the Melbourne and Sydney foyers – the entry and exit points for the expo hall.
ASIS ACT Speakers:
Major General Marcus Thompson is the inaugural Head of Information Warfare for the Australian Defence Force. As he nears the end of his tenure, Major General Thompson will share his experiences and challenges in a speech titled ‘Towards ADF Information Warfare – 4 years of growth’. His presentation to SAGE is Major General Thompson’s last public engagement in his role as HIW – not to be missed!
Raymond Frangie has a Graduate Certificate and Masters’ Degree in Information Systems Security focusing on Digital Forensics, numerous industry certifications, and is the first person in New South Wales, Australia, to be awarded the Australian Computer Society’s Certified Cyber Security Professional certification.
Raymond is a highly recommended and regarded Academic Lecturer, Academic Tutor and Cyber Security Deputy Unit Coordinator at Western Sydney University, International Industry Speaker and Thought Leader, and an Information Security, Cyber Security and Digital Business Subject Matter Expert (SME), with over 21 years combined experience across Information Technology, Information Security and Cyber Security.
Raymond has previously run his own company alongside working and consulting for numerous small, medium, and large enterprises, across all levels of management, C-Level and executive board level. Raymond provides a unique approach in delivering both broad and deep technical and business level Information Technology, Information Security and Cyber Security services, across many standards, frameworks, best practices, guidelines, industries, and market sectors.
At SAGE, his presentation will identify the convergence of physical and cybersecurity at smart buildings and the threats and opportunities this creates.
Nicky Finn is the Agency Security Adviser for the newly established National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA).
Nicky is a widely experienced and qualified Australian Government security practitioner, showing her passion for security over some 18 years as a protective security professional. She has worked in a variety of security management and leadership roles across a range of government agencies.
Nicky lives on 100 acres in Sutton with her husband Andrew, a menagerie of animals and a collection of classic and vintage cars. The SAGE ASIS presentation by Nicky will set out the roles and responsibilities involved in gaining certification and accreditation for Australian Government compliant secure zones, as set out in the Protective Security Policy Framework, related guidance and standards.
Scott Taylor, CPP, JP, is chief operating officer, Southern Cross Group, and NSW ASIS Chapter Chairman. Scott has over 27 years security, safety and risk experience. He is a court and tribunal recognised security and risk specialist providing expert reports in numerous civil cases. He has consulted and lectured throughout the Middle East and USA, and worked with government, industry regulators and industry across all Australian States and Territories spanning the spectrum of security in all industry verticals.
Scott’s qualifications include a Graduate Diploma in Strategic Leadership, Advanced Diploma Integrated Risk Management, Diploma Security Risk Management, Diploma Work Health and Safety and a Diploma in Vocational Education and Training, a skillset allowing him to provide specialist consulting, training, and leadership. Scott is the current Chair of ASIS NSW Chapter and is a former member of the NSW Police Security Advisory Council. He also sits on numerous ASIS International Security Councils such as the Hospitality, Entertainment and Tourism Security Council and the Active Assailant & Violence Prevention Technical Standards Committee.
Julian Talbot, ASM, co-author, Security Risk Management Body of Knowledge (SRMBoK), has over 35 years of international security risk management experience gained on 5 continents as Chief Security Officer, security risk management consultant, and CEO in the resources, commercial, government, and not-for-profit sectors. His credentials include a Master of Risk Management (MRiskMgt), Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD), Australian Security Medal (ASM), former Certified Protection Professional (CPP), Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), and Fellow of the Risk Management Institution of Australasia (RMIA). He is the author of several books on security and the lead author of the Security Risk Management Body of Knowledge.
Julian has conducted enterprise security risk assessments (ESRAs) for over 25 years, responsible for $60 million enterprise security risk management plans for some of the largest organizations in the world, including the $24 billion North West Shelf Gas Project, the Australian Department of Defence, and the Australian Trade Commission.
Geoffrey Askew, AM, Principal, Askew & Associates, is former Senior Executive (Security and Emergency Management), QANTAS Group. Following a career with the Australian Defence Force and the Victoria State Police, Geoff joined Australian Airlines in 1988 and became Head of Security in 1991. When Qantas Airways Limited acquired Australian Airlines in 1994, he was appointed Group General Manager Security for the Qantas Group of companies, reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, a position he held until retiring from Qantas in 2009. Emergency Management & Business Resilience across the Qantas group were added to his responsibilities in early 2000.
Geoff chaired the Security Committee of the Association of Asia-Pacific Airlines (“AAPA”) in 2007/08 and the International Air Transport Association (“IATA”) Security Executive during its most challenging time in September 2001. He has also advised the APEC aviation security panel of experts. He was the chairman of Qantas Group responses to many international and domestic incidents, including September 11 in 2001, SARS, the Bali bombings, the 2004 Tsunami and many others.
On Australia Day 2010 Geoff was appointed as a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia for ‘service to the aviation industry through contributions to security policy and the development of improved crisis management programs.’ Since 2009 Geoff has been the Principal of his own consulting company, Askew & Associates, providing specialist professional services for many government and non-government businesses across numerous sectors. During this time, he also acted as CEO of Melbourne Aviation Precinct (now Melbourne Jet Base) and was co-founder and Director of SX Technologies, subsequently acquired by Rapiscan Systems.
