New AXIS P1518-LE Dual-Sensor AI Box Camera Delivers Simultaneous Wide Angle And Zoom.
New AXIS P1518-LE Dual-Sensor AI Box Camera – Axis Communications has launched the AXIS P1518-LE, a dual-sensor, AI-powered box camera that provides simultaneous wide-angle and close-up surveillance views from a single unit.
The camera is designed for outdoor surveillance, including building entrances, perimeter security, fences, and property lines, where it can monitor broad areas and simultaneously capture detailed close-ups of individuals approaching a location.
The AXIS P1518-LE incorporates 2 separate image sensors. A 1/1.2-inch progressive scan CMOS sensor provides 8MP wide-angle views at up to 30 frames per second, ensuring detailed surveillance coverage across large areas.
This sensor is coupled with a fixed 5.85 mm lens (F1.5), delivering a wide 113.8-degree horizontal field of view and strong low-light sensitivity, down to 0.05 lux in colour mode and 0 lux when IR illumination is activated.
Meanwhile, the second sensor, a 1/2.8-inch progressive scan CMOS, delivers 2MP close-up images at up to 60 frames per second to capture details with a minimum of motion blur. This sensor is equipped with a varifocal 10.9–29 mm lens (F1.7), providing adjustable horizontal fields of view from 29 to 11 degrees. Low-light sensitivity is rated at 0.06 lux in colour and 0 lux with IR illumination.
Both sensors feature Axis’s advanced imaging technologies, including Lightfinder 2.0 for superior performance in challenging low-light conditions, Forensic Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) rated up to 120dB to handle complex lighting scenes, and OptimizedIR to enable clear imaging in total darkness. Shutter speeds range from 1/66,500 to 2 seconds depending on WDR settings.
Built around Axis’s ARTPEC-8 SoC, the camera supports advanced AI-powered analytics on the edge. AXIS Object Analytics comes pre-installed, enabling detection, classification, tracking, and counting of humans and various vehicle types. The analytics system provides actionable metadata, enhancing the speed and accuracy of forensic video searches, significantly benefiting security operators during investigations.
The AXIS P1518-LE includes extensive cybersecurity protections. Axis Edge Vault offers a hardware-based cybersecurity platform with FIPS 140-3 Level 3-certified secure key storage. Additionally, the device incorporates signed firmware, secure boot, brute-force delay protection, and encrypted filesystem storage, meeting stringent cybersecurity standards and regulations such as ETSI EN 303 645.
Designed for rugged outdoor deployment, the AXIS P1518-LE meets stringent protection ratings, including IP66, IP67, IK10, and NEMA 4X, making it resistant to dust, water, corrosion, impacts, and extreme weather. The camera can withstand sustained wind speeds of up to 60m/s, suitable for installations exposed to harsh environmental conditions.
Installation features include remote focus and zoom, pan/tilt adjustments (±15 degrees), a pixel counter, and a traffic camera installation aid. These built-in installation tools simplify setup, reduce installation time, and help ensure accurate camera positioning.
The camera supports multiple video compression formats, including H.264 and H.265, and offers Axis Zipstream technology to manage bandwidth efficiently. It can stream up to 20 configurable video streams, though Axis recommends up to 3 unique streams per camera for optimal performance. Storage options include encrypted microSD cards and recording to network-attached storage (NAS).
Audio capabilities include duplex audio streaming, speaker and microphone pairing, and multiple audio encoding standards, including LPCM, AAC-LC, G.711 PCM, G.726 ADPCM, and Opus. External microphone input and digital inputs are also supported.
Comprehensive networking support includes IPv4 and IPv6 protocols, HTTPS, TLS, IEEE 802.1X authentication, MQTT, and ONVIF profiles G, M, S, and T. Integration with Axis Camera Application Platform (ACAP) allows third-party application installation, enhancing customisation possibilities.
The camera complies with numerous international standards and certifications, including CSA, UL/cUL, CE, FCC, RCM, VCCI, and railway standards IEC 62236-4. The device is also compliant with the Trade Agreements Act (TAA).
Power options include PoE IEEE 802.3af/at Type 1 Class 4, with DC input between 10–28V DC, and a typical power consumption of 13.2W (max 25.5W). Connectors provided include shielded RJ45 Ethernet, audio, serial communication ports, and terminal block connectors for digital I/O.
