One For the Propeller Heads

♦ One for the propeller heads – Star of the South, a vast offshore wind project likely to soon be approved for construction off the coast of Gippsland in Victoria – has gone to tender for everything, including comms, IT and electronic security solutions.

Star of the South is Australia’s first offshore wind project, and at up to 2.2 GW, it will be one of the largest offshore wind farms in the world, generating enough electricity to power up to 1.2 million homes – around 20 per cent of Victoria’s electricity needs.

The project incorporates 200 12-18MW offshore wind turbines on monopile foundations, array and export cabling with 4 substations, 75km of underground cabling, grid connection to Loy Yang or Hazelwood facilities, port facilities, maintenance facilities, storage facilities and plenty more.

While the project is not officially approved, over the last couple of days the stakeholders have gone to tender for everything from port facilities to turbine nacelles, making it highly likely that behind the scenes there’s tacit understanding this key piece of Australia’s renewable energy infrastructure is go.

While it’s not mentioned, there’s certain to be an access control component to this application, and the CCTV solution is going to be used for maintenance and plant monitoring, not just security and safety. Components of this tender package include:

* Closed-circuit TV system (CCTV)
* Public address and general alarm system (PA/GA)
* Fibre distribution system
* Heat tracing systems
* Local Area Network system (LAN)
* Telephone system
* Terrestrial trunked radio system (TETRA)
* VHF radio telephone system
* Weather station system
* Wireless local area network system (WLAN).

This tender closes September 30 – you can find out more here.
