Parents Want School CCTV Sharing During Emergencies.

Parents Want School CCTV Sharing – A recent survey commissioned by cloud video surveillance provider Eagle Eye Networks found 96 per cent of K-12 parents support mandating schools share security cameras with 911 communications centres during emergencies like school shootings.

Findings of the survey included that of the 96 per cent who favoured a sharing mandate, 56 preferred a federal mandate, 29 per cent wanted a community level mandate, and 11 per cent favoured a school district.

The survey found that 90 per cent supported government funding to deliver CCTV camera feeds to emergency call centres. It also indicated that 86 per cent of parents said they would feel safer with a school security system that delivered live video to emergency call centres.

Almost 80 per cent of respondents agreed that live-feed visibility into schools via security cameras would save lives during active shooter events School leaders and public safety officials say camera sharing can help quickly deliver critical information when time is of the essence.

There were around 360 school shootings in the U.S. in 2023, with around 230 killed and wounded, though only 4 of these incidents were considered mass shootings, which are defined as events in which 4 or more students or teachers are killed.

“First responders often approach the scene of an emergency with very little information about the whereabouts of suspects, innocent bystanders, and the physical layout of the scene,” said Bill Maverick, a security consultant and retired NY State Police special operations supervisor with expertise in active shooter response training.

“In addition, emergency situations are not static, they’re dynamic, changing from minute to minute. Having telecommunicators feed ongoing real-time information to first responders during an active shooter incident is a game changer, with the potential to dramatically improve outcomes and save lives.”

Motivating the survey was Eagle Eye Networks’ Camera Sharing solution, a new technology that gives emergency communication centres instant access to security cameras during an emergency, empowering them to deliver critical incident information to first responders.

“The public safety experts, school officials, and parents have spoken,” said Eagle Eye Networks’ CEO Dean Drako. “There’s resounding support for getting schools across the country to utilize camera sharing technology that will speed up emergency response and increase safety for children, educators, and first responders.”

The survey was conducted by Propeller Insights, a Los Angeles-based market research firm. A total of 1034 parents of K-12 students in the U.S. were surveyed between May 26 and June 5, 2024.

There’s an infographic displaying the findings of the survey here or read more SEN news here.

Are Alarm Sirens Necessary

Are Alarm Sirens Necessary With Modern Alarm Systems?

Are Alarm Sirens Necessary – Is it acceptable to disconnect an external siren from an alarm system if the alarm is causing issues with disturbance or if there is no location for the device?

Does this advice conform with what’s laid down in the Australian Standard? In SEN’s opinion, do internal and external sirens have a purpose in modern alarm systems, given layers of notification?

A: The Australian Standard’s (AS 2201.1 1998) Signalling Systems Section is the one applicable here. Of most relevance to this discussion is the fact that Section 6.2 of the standard notes:

“Some local ordinances may not permit audible alarms and others may impose limits on durations or limits on the sound level different from those specified (in the standard)”.

This is essentially an acknowledgement that local rules governing noise pollution take precedence over the stipulations of the standard in relation to the use of audible alarm signalling equipment. Taking this into account, any false alarm accompanied by an audible siren that generates a complaint actioned by police could also be considered limited by local ordinance.

More telling is that the standard defines categories of signalling on a scale of performance with Category A involving transmission beyond the client’s premises and Category B involving audible signalling at the client’s premises.

We’d argue that so long as the communications connection is functional (Category A), then activation of a local siren in accordance with Category B (especially if it occurs after repeated and unresolved nuisance alarms) is a breach of local ordinances that would be considered by police responding to a noise complaint to be unnecessary.

The broader question is whether internal and external sirens have a purpose in modern alarm systems. Even if you don’t install an external siren, most alarm hubs or keypads have an audible siren that’s plenty loud enough to see off an intruder without creating noise pollution on the street. Note this would likely not apply in strata applications.

Further, evidence with our own systems, supported by CCTV footage, indicates that intrusion events generating a siren typically cause the intruder to beat a retreat. Evidence suggests this response to a siren occurs even if the person is on site for a legitimate purpose – they will typically retire and attempt to contact building owners to explain their presence.

Are Alarm Sirens Necessary?

On a number of occasions, we’ve observed unexpected and unidentified visitors entering a property and approaching buildings but turning back after activating the external alarm sensors. While the impact we see is psychological there is a deterrent effect that is worth having.

We’d argue that the longer your expected response times, the earlier the siren should sound – that means when a designated perimeter is breached at a point before the intruder arrives at buildings.

You’d be managing this with externally-rated wireless sensors – that means IP55 or higher – preferrably with sunshades and installed without too much moving vegetation or thermally active surfaces in their angle of detection.

Ajax Keypad Touchscreen Combines Security And Smart Home Management.

Ajax Keypad Touchscreen – Ajax Keypad Touchscreen is a metal and scratch-resistant glass touchscreen keypad that provides an app-like interface for managing security and smart home systems.

Connecting via Ajax Jeweller and supporting Bluetooth and DESFire, the keypad allows users to view what parts of the system are armed and make changes, including securing one group, multiple groups, activating night mode, or arming an entire site.

There are 3 authentication methods, including smartphone NFC, pass card or tag keyfob and PIN code. Ajax pass cards and tag fobs are equipped with original DESFire chips and feature the same functionality but different enclosures. Credentials, which are available in batches, can control 13 security systems.

A smartphone with the installed Ajax app and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) support can be used instead of Tag or Pass to authorize a user. BLE is a radio protocol with low power consumption. The keypad supports Android and iOS smartphones with BLE 4.2 and higher.

The keypad has a light sensor for automatic backlight adjustment — bright during the day, not dazzling at night and a proximity sensor for automatic keypad activation when a hand approaches. There’s a distinctive buzzer that indicates alarms, delays, or other events. A separate tab contains up to 6 buttons, and each one can control one automation device or a group of devices.

Ajax Keypad Touchscreen is 172 x 82 x 26mm, weighs 327g, has integrated tamper, and an operating temperature of -10 to 40C. The capacitive touchscreen has a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels, a backlight lifespan of 30,000 hours and a warranty period of 24 months.

KeyPad TouchScreen provides a tab with configurable panic buttons that can notify about 3 event types. If the user is forced to disarm the system, they can use a duress code that simulates disarming while simultaneously sending a duress alarm to a control room.

The device regularly exchanges data with the hub. The system controls each device state and reports if there is a malfunction or connection loss. Updating the statuses of devices depends on the Jeweller settings; the default value is 36 seconds. Regardless of polling period, tamper alarms are sent instantly.

Installers pair KeyPad TouchScreen with a hub by scanning the QR code and there’s no enclosure disassembly or battery installation required. PRO Desktop software is available for professional monitoring.

You can learn more about Ajax Keypad Touchscreen here or read more SEN news here – any distributors who want to send us one for test purposes will be recognised generously.

WAPOL PSCore App Reports Family Violence Through Mobile Response Management System.

WAPOL PSCore App Reports Family Violence – Western Australia Police is deploying a smart mobile app integrated with its PSCore mobile response management system allowing police officers to better support victims of family violence.

The PSCore app enables police officers to record a wider variety of incidents from the field and to automatically alert partner agencies and support services when family violence reports are submitted.

The PSCore application integrates critical operational information from multiple systems, presenting it through a single, intuitive interface. Deployed across WA Police Force’s 6500 mobile devices, the solution represents a key part of its digital policing strategy to leverage technology to improve productivity, incident awareness and safety for officers and the public alike.

“When police officers respond to an incident, they need accurate and relevant information to inform their decisions while keeping themselves and community members safe,” said superintendent Dean Snashall, Technology Portfolio, WA Police Force.

“The addition of a new family violence reporting capability is another way this mobile application helps our officers to respond to different kinds of incidents.”

By supporting WA Police Force officers with a risk assessment framework and a summary of the family violence history of offences, Motorola Solutions’ PSCore application has enabled noteworthy improvements in compliance levels and workflows for all family violence reports.

“By providing access to critical back-end databases including computer aided dispatch and records systems, our smart mobile applications help front-line personnel to complete key operational tasks from wherever they are, allowing them to work with greater focus, accuracy and speed,” said Con Balaskas, managing director for Australia and New Zealand, Motorola Solutions.
