Telstra Outage Affecting Mobile Network

Telstra Outage
Are You Still Waiting?

Telstra Outage – Until late this afternoon, 19 March 2024, thousands of mobile network users were affected by a significant Telstra outage. The outage issue was eventually resolved at 2:35 PM this afternoon.

Irrespective of various news reports, there was “no impact to data nor 000 calls“, according to the Telstra spokesperson. The implication is that because the internet was not affected, it was still possible to make voice-over IP calls using applications such as WhatsApp, Facetime, Messenger or many other applications that use the internet to transfer video and audio.

“If you’re a Telstra customer you might be noticing some issues with mobile calls. We’re working on a fix and hope to get everything back up and running soon,” the company wrote on social media about 2pm.

The online Down Detecter system shows that the outage started at around 11:45 a.m., but was “resolved at around 2:30 p.m.” this afternoon, according to Telstra.

Thousands of users reported that incoming and outgoing calls were not connecting, and any that did would result in dead air time.

An alert on the Telstra website mentioned an outage had impacted the NBN Voice and Data services, merely causing some modems to disconnect from the exchange.

A strange opposing view between the Telstra spokesperson and the Telstra outages reporting pages. Nevertheless, the company apologised and all was good.

A screenshot from the company’s main network services page was taken at 4:30 p.m. today.

“Good news! The issue impacting some mobile voice calls was fixed at around 2.30 PM (AEDT) today. The issue was caused by a software change. We’re sorry for the impact on your day,” Telstra wrote on X (Twitter).

“No worries MATE, she’ll be right!”

Camera PIR Or AI Camera – What’s Best?

Camera PIR Or AI Camera – What’s Best?
Camera PIR Or AI Camera – What’s best in external applications?

Camera PIR Or AI Camera – What’s Best At Detecting Movement In External Applications?

Camera PIR Or AI Camera – What’s best at detecting external movement? When this question started doing the rounds recently it caused some serious reflection at the SEN office.

Experience confirms that external sensing applications are tricky and there are conditions under which most intrusion sensors, including quality dual technology sensors, are going to find themselves stretched to breaking point.

In such applications, a sensor camera able to provide a few frames covering moments of activation proves seriously valuable – so valuable we tend to think most external sensor applications would benefit from integrated cameras that give business owners or control room operators eyes on the trigger.

Camera PIR Or AI Camera 4 Axis LR
Camera PIR Or AI Camera – What’s Best? Here’s line crossing with an Axis camera.

The toughest conditions we’ve found are hot days – the closer to 37C the tougher – with a strong wind moving trees and shrubs backwards and forwards. This combination of heat and movement leads to triggering of PIR side and microwave side of a sensor, and with both detection technologies in alarm, an event is activated.

Contributing to such challenges are dark external surfaces at closer ranges – within 5 metres – that absorb and radiate heat on cooler days in such a way as to create plumes of warm air that can trigger the PIR side. This makes the sensor vulnerable to gusts of wind causing vegetation movement that sporadically trigger the microwave side of the sensor, leading to false alarms.

Camera PIR Or AI Camera – What’s Best?

We’d argue that in commercial and high security applications these issues can be significant enough to demand moving of sensors to avoid conditions described. Certainly, having a camera integrated into the sensor does allow fast triage of alarm events by security officers or security operators in a monitoring centre. Even still, the underlying cause of such false alarms in certain conditions remains.

So, that brings us to whether a CCTV camera with line-crossing analytics is more reliable in a range of external conditions than a dual technology sensor. In our experience IVA-enabled cameras are more reliable than sensors on hot days – their detection parameters are different and thermal patterns don’t worry them.

Camera PIR Or AI Camera 2 Bosch LR
Camera PIR Or AI Camera – What’s Best?

Instead, the issues we’ve experienced revolve around reductions in range during the night and false alarm activations generated by nocturnal wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies and wombats. Other conditions that impact camera IVA solutions include fog and rain, though these attenuate intrusion sensors, too. Alarms can also be generated by wind blown shrubbery but these problem areas can be masked out.

Is a camera installed as a sensor capable of outperforming a quality intrusion sensor in challenging external applications while also offering high resolution video streams? We’d argue that a quality external camera – not the cheapest piece of junk on the shelf – carefully installed to cover a thoughtfully considered area – could outperform an external alarm sensor.

Camera PIR Or AI Camera – What’s Best?

In SEN’s opinion you’d install and commission the camera to specifically cover the most challenging light period and make sure the scene had no moving IR reflections, no wildlife and few or no moving plants. There are negatives with cameras in that you can’t fit them with a 10-year battery and screw them to a wall – there’s star config blue cable and node zero to consider.

But if you’re putting in cameras anyway, then line crossing is a worthy addition. IVA cameras unquestionably have superior image quality – there’s no contest there.

But there are circumstances in which getting them installed where you need them might prove challenging. You can put a wireless camera PIR anywhere there’s RF range. It’s not the same with IP cameras.

We’d be interested in hearing thoughts in the comments from techs who’ve run both technologies side-by-side taking into account parameters like catch performance and false alarm resistance.

You can read more about Bosch video analytics here (we had to pick some one for our external SEO link and Bosch (and i-PRO) do IVA very well), or you can find more SEN news here.

Tecom ChallengerLEPlus First Impressions Pre-Installation At SEN.

Tecom ChallengerLEPlus First Impressions – ChallengerLEPlus is a tried and tested access control and intrusion solution designed for SME applications while offering all the usual features you’d expect from a Tecom system.

Recently DAS’ Jhim Adobo brought a Tecom ChallengerLEPlus kit into the SEN office for us to have a go at installing – this first look saw Adobo do some cabling up, run through the core features and explain how everything fits together.

ChallengerLEPlus is designed to be affordable, capable, compact and cost-effective. Importantly, though, the system includes big features you really want, including native Ethernet, mobile app support, C-Bus integration, 3G and 4G expansion module support and management software connectivity.

These expansion and comms capabilities give ChallengerLEPlus gravitas when it comes to remote management, secure reporting and system expansion.

Tecom Challenger LE First Impressions 3 LR
Tecom ChallengerLEPlus First Impressions.

ChallengerLEPlus also offers a secure, encrypted connection to a monitoring station via UltraSync, as well as a mobile app that gives you push notifications and the ability to manage and control your system wherever you happen to be.

Tecom ChallengerLEPlus First Impressions

The key takeaway for me watching Adobo set the system up at the SEN office was speed at which everything happened. It was quick and setting up in software was superfast, too.

This kit has 2 doors and 8 alarm inputs – there are a couple of sensors to hand, but we didn’t play with them. Instead, the focus was standing the system up with a door programmed, the system on the SEN network and workstation and the app functioning on my phone.

Tecom Challenger LE First Impressions 2 LR
Tecom ChallengerLEPlus First Impressions.

What struck me was just how quickly all that took place. Adobo knows exactly what he’s doing being a Tecom trainer but the underlying simplicity of this solution was on display.

In part because Tecom has a long history it’s easy not to appreciate how much work has been done recently to shape the latest Tecom solutions for modern requirements – but shaped they certainly are.

Tecom ChallengerLEPlus First Impressions

Getting the system into a networked environment was easy, downloading the app and connecting up was a snap. Throughout the process it was surprising to note just how slick the interfaces were. This is a capable solution that well and truly stacks up in SME applications while offering the dependability installers and end users associate with Tecom Challenger solutions.

Stand by for SEN’s full review of Tecom ChallengerLEPlus coming up soon! You can read the full specifications here or find more SEN news here.

Gallagher Adds Video Linking And Panic Notifications To SMB Solution.

Gallagher adds video linking and panic notifications To SMB – Gallagher Security has announced 2 new features for its cloud-based security solution SMB – SMB Video Linking and SMB Panic Notifications.

With many SMB end users also deploying CCTV systems, Gallagher engineers realised an opportunity that enabled existing camera systems to merge with SMB without the need for further investment or training was essential.

According to Gallagher Security senior product manager SMB, Lisa Tubb, the release of SMB Video Linking gives end users more clarity when an alarm is triggered at their business.

“By allowing users to connect to their security camera app via the SMB app, they can instantly validate whether a genuine threat exists, or whether a false alarm has been triggered and then action the appropriate response.

“Security camera systems are costly to replace, but the SMB Video Linking feature works with a range of camera systems so you can continue using your existing setup and the functionality that comes with it,” Tubb said.

“Video linking supports a range of major security camera brands including Eagle Eye, Hanwha Vision, NX Witness and Provision IR with more to be added in future.”

Gallagher Adds Video Linking And Panic Notifications To SMB

The additional release of panic notifications enables more control over the alarm events end users see, receiving alerts for only those deemed critical. This ensures less noise, and the assurance end users will never miss an emergency.

Gallagher SMB Sends Video Into A Panic 2 LR
Gallagher Adds Video Linking And Panic Notifications To SMB.

“With so many notifications coming into your phone throughout the day, reducing the noise is important,” Tubb explains. “With SMB Panic Notifications, users can opt to receive only panic alarm alerts, which is especially important for business owners, area managers or health and safety officers who have oversight of the security of multiple business sites.

“By receiving only these types of notifications, key decision-makers experience less noise and can act quickly if a security incident relating to their staff occurs.

“We’re excited to bring these new features to the SMB solution, providing a greater user experience and improved business efficiency for our users.”

Currently available in New Zealand, Australia, and the United States, Gallagher SMB is a cloud-based platform designed to simplify the security operations of businesses via an easy-to-use mobile app.
