SEN Weekly Wrap 006 – All The Latest Tidbits In Security This Week.

SEN Weekly Wrap 006 – As usual we arrive at SEN Weekly Wrap with a queue out the door and last week’s Chiko rolls clambering out of the fryer.

Given the time constraints we’re going to pull the trigger on this one with less than the usual effort to turn the weekly wrap into Friday’s favourite dinner.

From the top, Singtel is in talks to sell Australia’s second largest Telco Optus to Brookfield, a $US900 billion global asset management fund. In other business news, the Northern Territory’s largest private security business – monitoring, alarms, patrols, etc – is for sale for $A4.25 million.

ISC West is looming – there’s always a monster contingent from ANZ. The big event opens April 9-12 and Gallagher’s Lisa Tubb has told SSN the biggest themes to emerge may be the convergence of security and simplicity for everyday users.

“There’s a real need to develop solutions with the average person in mind to protect against sophisticated cyber threats while still maintaining a simplified interface, and I expect we’ll see more vendors shifting their focus to that underserved market at ISC West,” Tubb said.

Milestone users were advised the other day they needed to provide customer information – full company name, street address, and country and contact details—like first/last name, phone number, and email address – for all purchases of Milestone products from here out.

SEN Weekly Wrap 006 – All The Latest

A purchase order guide has been created to assist in the submission of the customer information to Milestone distribution partners. From what consideration this stipulation emerges we’ve not yet heard – will keep you posted.

Optic Security Group continues its solid path, opening a new Perth office, expanding its WA team – you’d assume this is on the back of a contract win and such speculation would be justified given the company’s performance in projects. On that subject, the Optic-secured Auckland Rail Operations Centre opened during the week and it looks very swish – we’re guessing a Lee Ashton-designed solution.

Product stuff – Hikvision has released its new DS-K2702WX-E1(P) access control system which starts out with 2 doors and can expand using DS-K2M002X access modules to handle up to 126 doors per controller, as well as 200,000 cards. The system has RS-485 system comms and a bunch of other cool stuff we’ll talk about soon. The spec says PoE and Wi-Fi – interesting.

While we’re talking about big Chinese manufacturers playing outside their expected spaces, why not throw in Dahua’s AirShield wireless security system, which consists of alarm hubs, various wireless peripheral devices and several applications for end-users, installers and ARCs, all compliant with EN50131 Grade-2 standards.

More products – SALTO has launched MIFARE DESFire EV3 credentials and ASSA ABLOY has launched the Securitron DR100 Aperio wireless card reader with relay, which supports HID multiclass SE and NFC/BLE mobile access card technologies.

SEN Weekly Wrap 006 – All The Latest

The DR100 is said to be the industry’s first wireless reader with relay control providing simplified access control for single and double swinging and sliding doors where an integrated wireless lock can’t be used. These applications include turnstiles, overhead doors, loading dock doors and roof access doors.

Amazon Blink has released the Blink Mini 2 camera – a compact, weather-resistant design that can now be used indoors or outdoors. Blink Mini 2 offers enhanced image quality with improved low light performance, a wider field of view, and a built-in LED spotlight for night view in colour.

Blink’s business has quintupled over the last 4 years – no wonder given its new camera offers CV-enabled person detection and 2-way talk for the outrageously low price of $US39. Ouch.

Hanwha has added dual light capabilities to its Q Series AI cameras. The new dual-light capabilities combine with analytics for more accurate object, vehicle, and people detection. Meanwhile IDIS has released the DC-16212WRX 2MP video intercom. This unit is NEMA 4X, IK10, and IP66 rated product – everything you need in many external entry applications.

There’s a security RTO for sale in Sydney for $A2 million – you can check that out in the link below. Tenders have not lept into our lap this week, but we’ll be doing another scratch around tonight post kid’s bedtime, so re-visit and check the latest.

Here’s the latest on tenders – not much going on in Australia apart from the neverending story of NT health’s CCTV and access control system. Though Port of Newcastle needs an upgrade to enhance ship security – the tender is a bit opaque but something to look out for. And the Batchelor Institute in Darwin needs security. More action in NZ – Bay of Plenty needs security services, alarm monitoring and CCTV tech support. We’ll keep hunting and keep you posted…

There’s a link to that RTO sale here or you can read more SEN news here.

Singtel Considering Offloading Optus for $16B

0
Optus Sale

Singtel Considering Offloading Optus for $A16B – Media recently reported that Singtel is in advanced talks with Brookfield in relation to selling Optus, one of Australia’s largest Telcos.

It was recently reported in the Australian Financial Review that Singtel, the parent company of Optus, has been in advanced negotiations with Brookfield, a US-based equity fund, in a deal potentially worth $16B.

Singtel, Optus’ ultimate parent, is Singapore Telecommunications Limited’s Singapore-based telecommunications provider. It is a foreign-owned offshore private company that derives revenue from providing telecommunication services. The company employs approximately 6980 people, operates in Australia, and is administered by its head office in Macquarie Park, New South Wales. It has owned Optus for over 2 decades.

It was stated that should the deal proceed, it would deliver an expected value of between $16-$18B for Optus.

The current hurdle is that because Optus is Australia’s second-largest Telco, it owns and maintains an enormous infrastructure within Australia.

This infrastructure is used to carry massive payloads of traffic, including data, voice, and communications, that could potentially place national security at risk should this data traffic fall into the hands of foreign actors.

Much of the end-to-end encryption in telecommunications is also handled by the providers, which means there is potential for this data to be accessed.

In addition to this, these mobile and internet connections are an integral part of Australian main networks and are considered critical modern-day infrastructure.

Any deal of this nature would be scrutinized to the nth degree by all and sundry, as expected. Regulators would place every aspect of the deal under careful consideration before allowing the contract to settle.

Cyber Breach

In September 2022, a massive cyber data breach occurred, which affected nearly 10 million current and former customers. Information stolen included names, birthdates, home addresses, phone numbers, email contacts, and passport and driving licence numbers.

Conflicting claims have been made about how the breach happened; Optus presented it as an advanced international cyber attack. However, an Optus whistleblower and the Australian government have claimed that human error was at fault that caused a vulnerability in the company’s API. A ransom notice was made, asking for A$1,500,000 to stop the data from being sold online. After a few hours, they deleted the ransom notice and apologised for their actions.

Losses

The last financial quarter in December 2023 saw a drop in profits of 12.5 per cent to $464 million. Nonetheless, Optus reported a $1.8 billion revenue in operations, being 5.4 per cent less than the same period in 2022.

With Singtel Considering Offloading Optus Telstra had claimed in media reports that many of the customers who left Optus after the cyber attack had been Telstra’s gain. We have yet to see the impact, if any, on profits due to these attacks.

Optus appears to remain solid, with around 10.5 million mobile customers. Much of the infrastructure that Optus uses is built and owned by Optus, such as repeater towers, communications hubs and microwave links. They are also expanding deeper into regional areas.

Researchers Hack CCTV Camera Engines By Capturing EMI From Processor Wiring.

Researchers Hack CCTV Camera Engines – Researchers at Northeastern University in the U.S. have hacked into CCTV cameras and captured video signals passing between processors in their camera engines.

Kevin Fu, a Northeastern University professor of electrical and computer engineering who specializes in cybersecurity, showed it was possible to eavesdrop on most modern IP CCTV cameras. Called EM Eye (short for Electromagnetic Eye), his technique can capture video from a camera through walls in real time.

Fu said anyone with a few hundred dollars of equipment, a radio antenna and a little bit of engineering know-how could do the same. The issue is the signals passing between the processors that comprise the camera engine.

“There are wires between 2 different chips inside and those wires give off electromagnetic radiation,” Fu says. “We pick up that radio, and then we decode it, and we can see the real-time encoded video.”

Wiring that sends a video as bits and bytes ends up unintentionally acting as a radio antenna that leaks all kinds of electromagnetic information, says Fu.

If someone had the desire and the technical knowledge, they could take that electromagnetic signal and reproduce the real-time video, without audio, he says.

According to Fu, the technique exposes a gap in how manufacturers approach the design and production of cameras and smart devices.

“Smartphone manufacturers try really hard to protect the intentional digital interfaces, the actual upload channel to the cloud,” Fu says. “But they don’t appear to put a lot of effort into the leakage of information through unintended channels. They never intended for this wire to become a radio transmitter, but it is.”

Free NBN Upgrade

Free NBN Fibre Upgrade – You may be aware of the 2024 FREE Fibre upgrade the government has recently offered. If you are interested, applications have started being actioned.

Another 2 million Aussie homes will now be able to have an optic fibre cable installed directly into their lounge room or study, rather than suffering from slow copper speeds on the last few metres.

Related Article: G.fast and Australian Copper Network Decay

This fibre to the premises (FTTP) service is an initiative of the NBN, which will see them cable an optic fibre all of the way to your house, allowing you to plug it directly into your modem. This is a big deal.

On average, the cost, if you had to pay for this, the cost would be upward of $10,000 for an average suburban house or apartment install. This will not only add value to your property and give you stable, fast internet, but it will also give you access to higher-end services such as IPTV, multiple people and devices online at once, faster downloads and uploads, including working from the cloud and no latency gaming.

This was only recently available in February 2024, but the applications are now fully open and processed quickly.

SEN News applied for a service to examine the process, and we can say that the whole process was efficient, fast and effective. After application approval, which was instant, we were booked for an inspection of the premises the following week. An NBN technician arrived on time and made the necessary checks to ensure compatibility. The following week, we were live with Gigabit Ethernet directly to the rack. Very impressive indeed.

BGWT Showcasing Pelco Esprit Compact PTZ At SecTech – Released in 2022, the Pelco Esprit Compact PTZ is a proven industrial-grade camera that is monitoring shipping ports and large industrial facilities around the world.

SEN caught up with Peter Ha, Pelco product manager at BGW Technologies to learn more about the intricacies that make this camera the leader in its class.

“First and foremost, the Esprit Compact is equipped with precise pan, tilt, and zoom functionality offering unmatched flexibility in surveillance operations,” Ha said.

“Using wide dynamic range, the Esprit Compact captures every detail from wide-angle panoramic views to close-up shots with remarkable clarity enabling operators to navigate the surveillance landscape with effortless precision, especially in scenes with dark and light backgrounds.

“Its dynamic range of motion ensures comprehensive coverage without missing a beat. Whether it’s on board a harbour ferry or securing an industrial chemical plant, this camera safeguards that no visual nuance will go unnoticed.”

According to Ha, this camera really is impressive on many levels.

“Firstly its design is robust and weather-resistant, the casing ensures reliable performance in most environments, and when I say ‘most’, I mean pretty much any.” Ha explains. “It has an operating range in temperatures from -40 degrees to 65 degrees C, rain, hail, snow and sunshine, the environment would have to be seriously extreme to stop this camera preforming.

“Secondly, and a real standout, are the camera’s intelligent tracking capabilities. Using advanced algorithms, this camera can automatically track moving objects with great accuracy, keeping them in focus. Smart Analytics, powered by Motorola Solutions proves invaluable in scenarios where real-time monitoring is essential, providing a seamless surveillance experience.”

On the compliance side of things, Ha says the camera is equipped with ONVIF Profile S, G and T and is NDAA-compliant, allowing for open connectivity with Pelco VideoXpert and supports leading video management solutions including Milestone X-Protect. It uses H.264 and H.265 with smart compression technology, meaning that it optimises compression levels for regions in a scene to help maximise bandwidth savings and keep storage costs down.

“Esprit Compact has been tested to MIL-STD-167-1A and 810G, allowing for extreme shock and vibration tolerance,” says Ha. “It is IK10-rated for 20 joule impact resistance and is NEMA TS2 and IP66/67 rated. You can really see that this camera was built to withstand extreme weather, shock, vibration and humidity.

“Seamless integration is a hallmark of the Esprit Compact, allowing it to effortlessly integrate with existing surveillance systems for enhanced functionality. Compatibility with various protocols and platforms makes this camera a versatile asset in any security setup, ensuring a cohesive and streamlined monitoring experience.”

Victoria’s Country Fire Authority Upgrades With Motorola APX series P25 Radios.

Victoria’s Country Fire Authority Upgrades With Motorola – Victoria’s Country Fire Authority will modernise front-line communications with 16,000 Motorola Solutions APX series P25 broadband-enabled smart radios to improve safety, collaboration and emergency response.

Included in the package will be approximately 9,000 of Motorola Solutions’ APX NEXT all-band smart radios, which provide mission-critical voice communications and productivity-enhancing data applications to enhance safety and incident awareness for firefighters.

“APX radios enable the reliable communication that’s critical for fire and emergency agencies to collaborate, particularly in the face of more frequent and severe natural disasters and other complex events,” said Con Balaskas, managing director for Australia and New Zealand, Motorola Solutions.

“And our APX NEXT radios bring additional capabilities that maximise the use of data in the field, delivering rich insights to further strengthen workflow efficiency and safety.”

APX NEXT data applications include SmartConnect to automatically switch voice communications from land mobile radio (LMR) to broadband networks when users travel outside of radio coverage areas, SmartMapping to pinpoint the location of firefighters and vehicles in the field, and ViQi voice control to enable first responders to quickly manage radio controls through simple and intuitive voice commands.

Motorola Solutions will upgrade and support CFA’s radio equipment relied upon for front-line firefighting communication, strengthening emergency response from brigades as part of a 10-year services contract. The modernisation program will replace CFA’s radios used in the field, on fire trucks, in command vehicles and within fire stations.

The new devices will be used on the Victorian Government’s Regional Mobile Radio (RMR) and Metropolitan Mobile Radio (MMR) networks, which provide secure radio communications across regional, rural and metropolitan Victoria.
