Securing A 40 Metre Boundary Better With IR Beams Or External Sensors?

Securing A 40 Metre Boundary – We’ve got an external boundary of about 40m that adjoins a pathway leading to a school. This boundary is a particular security threat. What would you use to secure it, given that an infrared external sensor won’t have the power to push the whole boundary on its own, while microwave could leak into the adjacent walkway and give us false alarms?

A: There are a couple of other possibilities, especially if you have cover – Bosch’s long range DS720i TriTech sensor is a proven performer with detection capabilities out to 92 metres.

There are some very capable external wireless sensors, including the DSC PG4902 curtain, and AJAX’s 2-sided curtain, and the AJAX MotionCam Outdoor. Risco’s WatchOUT is another solid performer in tough applications. However, these last 4 fall short of the 40-metre range you require.

We’d recommend a high-quality IR beam. IR is inexpensive and ideal for smaller perimeter jobs. DSC’s PG9200AX PowerG photoelectric beam wireless detector would be a perfect compact solution for this application if you’re using PowerSeries Neo, PowerSeries Pro or Qolsys IQ panels.

IR beams can manage distances up to 200m, so your 40m fence line will be within reach. You’ll be wiring in the transmitter to an alarm input at the controller or a nearby expander, so technically, it’s straightforward.

Distributors carry a bunch of hardwired options from manufacturers like Optex and Takex – have a poke around – you’ll come up with something.

You can find out more about Optex photoelectric beams here or read more SEN news here.
