See Sintela ONYX nano Optical Fibre Perimeter Sensor At SAGE – Perimeter Systems Australia is showing Sintela ONYX nano at Security and Government Expo, held in partnership with ASIS ACT seminars at the Realm Hotel November 19.
A key feature of DAS is that the sensing hardware can remain in the equipment room rather than being distributed along the perimeter.ONYX nano incorporates the optical sensing components, electronics and processing hardware in a 19-inch 1U enclosure weighing less than 6kg and consuming around 40W. It can operate from AC or DC power and uses a Class 1 laser.
The system uses distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) to turn a standard fibre-optic cable into a continuous array of acoustic sensors for perimeter intrusion detection. ONYX nano analyses changes in the optical fibre to detect and locate disturbances along its length.
Footsteps, vehicles and fence disturbances produce different acoustic signatures, which are analysed using Sintela’s application-specific detection and classification algorithms incorporating artificial intelligence, machine learning and heuristic techniques.
Sintela specifies location accuracy of 3m for perimeter applications and the system can monitor up to 20km of fibre from a single ONYX nano unit, with the fibre installed on a fence, buried underground or mounted on walls. Virtual smart zoning allows different sections of the same fibre to be configured for different installation types. Sintela also offers cut-resilient and dual-redundant configurations using 2 fibres.
The ONYX nano has a 133dB high dynamic range and sensitivity down to -65dB rad/√Hz, with Sintela specifying the ability to resolve axial strain of 1.5 pico-strain using standard single-mode optical fibre. The system is also compatible with multimode fibre.
Sensing parameters including pulse width, gauge length, sample rate and decimation factor are software-defined, allowing the system to be configured for different deployments. An integrated processor handles edge processing, while each ONYX nano includes a web server for remote access. GNSS synchronisation can be used to provide accurately time-stamped data.
For security applications, ONYX nano can integrate with existing video management systems, IP cameras and radar devices. Sintela’s perimeter intrusion detection platform is designed to provide real-time alerts while using the fibre as a continuous sensing medium, with the company reporting average nuisance-alarm reductions of 99 per cent in comparison with other perimeter intrusion detection systems.
The system is intended for sites where long perimeters, remote areas or difficult operating environments make conventional point sensors impractical. Applications include critical infrastructure, utilities, mining, transport, industrial sites and other facilities requiring continuous perimeter monitoring.
At SAGE Perimeter Systems Australia will demonstrate ONYX nano as a fibre-based perimeter intrusion detection platform and show how its sensing and classification capabilities can be integrated with wider security systems.
