Telstra and Optus Push Back 3G Sunset – Telstra and Optus have pushed back the 3G sunset to 4G and 5G networks to 28 October in a move that recognises emergency services, medical monitoring systems and security monitoring applications have failed to migrate in time.

“Telstra, along with Optus, have announced that they are extending the closure of their 3G networks and conducting a public safety awareness campaign, so all Australians know what action they need to take ahead of the shutdown – all 3G users now need to move to 4G and 5G networks before 28 October 2024,” said Telstra in a letter to its customers.

“We have been communicating to our customers about the need to prepare for the closure for almost 5 years. Closure of the nation’s 3G networks and moving people to better connectivity is an industry-wide change and everyone using devices that rely on 3G for data, voice or emergency calls, needs to prepare to stay connected when it switches off. It is critical customers check their devices are compatible with the 4G network, particularly to ensure they are still able to call emergency services.”

According to Telstra, any device in the following categories will be impacted when the 3G network is closed:

  • 3G only devices
  • 4G devices that do not support 4G voice over LTE calling (4G VoLTE calling)
  • 4G devices that are hardwired to use 3G for emergency calls
  • 4G limited band devices that do not fully support 4G may not connect in some Telstra 4G coverage areas (Band 28 700Mhz frequency required)
  • 4G VoLTE capable devices requiring device settings change and/or power cycle to connect to 4G.

“While there is now more time for you to make the transitions, we urge you to not delay and take action today,” Telstra said.

In response to the changes, Inner Range’s Mark Edwards said Wesco Anixter branches would continue to provide Inner Range’s trade-in offer on the T4000 communicator until the sunset date is finally met – you can learn more about that offer here or read more SEN news here.
