Victoria’s COVID-19 Case Numbers Plummet

Victoria’s COVID-19 case numbers continue to plummet – in the past 24 hours there have been 14 new cases, with no new cases in regional areas and 94 cases currently in hospital.

“These numbers are coming down,” said Victoria’s Premier, Daniel Andrews. “This is thanks to the hard work of every single Victorian, the vast, vast majority of Victorians who are following the rules, doing the right thing, getting tested as soon as they have symptoms.

“I’d love to be able to announce that everything is opening up tomorrow – of course I would. And maybe that would be something that would be praised by many people. But I don’t think that praise would be around a few weeks later when we had to close Victoria down again. We only have one way to go here, and that’s to do it safe, steady and then lock it in.”

In the past 24 hours NSW recorded 2 new cases, with no community infections for the first time in 105 days. Australia’s most populous state has a rolling 14-day new case average of under 4, mostly linked to recent arrivals in quarantine. Australia’s other states continue to experience very low infection rates, with most those infected having now recovered.

Importantly, states are beginning to seriously plan reopenings, with SA set to open to NSW this weekend and Qld planning to open to parts of NSW, while NSW plans to open to regional Victoria.

Globally, infection rates continue to climb, with a massive second wave  – the UK registered 6000 new cases in the past 24 hours – threatening to engulf Europe in a punishing second lockdown that underscores the importance of carefully managing social and workplace interactions until a workable vaccine is developed.

Regardless of these developments, Victorians remain under painful lockdown and have been severely restricted for many months.
