What is LoRaWan?

What’s interesting about LoRa and its LoRaWan network architecture from a security perspective is that it’s low draw, low bitrate and long range - LoRa will deliver 5 km ranges in urban areas and 16 km in rural applications. This makes it ideal for battery-powered remote applications in Australia and New Zealand.

What Is LoRaWan Radio Communication And What Are Its Benefits?

What is LoRaWan – One of the more interesting communications technologies of the past decade is LoRa, a long-range chirp spread spectrum technology created by French tech company, Cycleo.

What’s interesting about LoRa and its LoRaWan network architecture from a security perspective is that it’s low draw, low bitrate and long range – LoRa will deliver 5 km ranges in urban areas and 16 km in rural applications. This makes it ideal for battery-powered remote applications in Australia and New Zealand.

LoRa’s forward error correction coding is another strength of the technology, reducing the impact of interference in challenging environments. When we said low bitrate, we’re talking 0.3-50Kbps, which while not great for many applications, is perfect for security and automation data.

Modulated on a frequency of 915-930Mhz in Australia, LoRa allows a hardware device to send and receive data on a single channel. LoRaWAN, meanwhile, is a standard that allows thousands of LoRa devices to function in a WAN managed by software like LoPy4, or proprietary variations.

The appeal of LoRa is its low-power, long-range capability when compared to wireless technologies like Zigbee and Bluetooth, though the benefits come at the cost of those far lower data rates. LoRa devices also have geolocation capabilities used for trilaterating positions of devices via timestamps from gateways.

The proprietary spread spectrum modulation used by LoRa is based on chirp spread spectrum, with a cyclic shifted chirp over the band centred on the base frequency. Developers select the spread factor from 5 to 12 – numbers which represent the bits per symbol and the data spread. Unsurprisingly, the wider the spread, the lower the data rate and the higher the comparative energy consumption, which is relevant in battery-powered devices.

In terms of communications, LoRa is the comms protocol, while LoRaWAN is the network architecture. At a network level, LoRaWAN is a cloud-controlled MAC layer protocol which manages comms between LPWAN gateways. At a cloud level, it specifies formats for upper layers supported by an IP transport protocol.

LoRaWAN also manages device and network frequencies, data rates and power consumption. LoRA devices are asynchronous and will transmit when data arrives. When data is transmitted from a device, it will be received by multiple gateways, enhancing redundancy, and forwarded to a server. Typically, cloud back-ends employ the JSON format for data handling and data is encrypted between device and cloud application.

The LoRa Alliance has a membership that includes Amazon, Cisco, Microsoft, Every net, MachineQ, Zenner, STMicroelectronics and hundreds more. Security solutions that employ LoRa include GJD’s LX LoRa Connect, which is designed to allow IP devices to transmit signals across distances of up to 10 kilometres via wireless.

Each GJD LX LoRa Connect system can connect and support up to 500 devices without the need for expensive data cables and logistical challenges. This integration seamlessly incorporates devices into a unified network alongside other control, automation, and security systems, making the technology highly appealing in remote locations, as well as for large sites.
