ADT Deploys Remote CCTV For MainPower Substations To Provide Visibility, Reduce Response Times And Address Risk.

ADT Deploys Remote CCTV For MainPower Substations – ADT has deployed remote CCTV for multiple MainPower substations across North Canterbury.

The system is designed to protect remote electricity infrastructure while maintaining operational visibility across substations operated by MainPower New Zealand Limited in North Canterbury.

MainPower manages critical energy assets distributed across remote locations where regular site inspections are time consuming and costly. The company required a security and monitoring solution capable of providing real-time visibility of multiple substations, reducing response times during incidents and improving public safety while addressing the risk of vandalism and theft.

Working with security integrator, ADT, MainPower implemented a surveillance system designed to operate across sites with limited communications infrastructure and unique electrical and cabling constraints typical of power substations. The project needed to address remote locations without cellular reception, complex power environments and differing operational requirements across multiple sites.

“ADT took the time to understand our requirements, offering tailored solutions that met our needs,” said Jonathan Battson, MainPower’s head of asset management & operations.

“ADT has a proven track record as an established provider in New Zealand,” Battson said. “They deliver security services to major businesses of regional importance and we needed this level of service and expert advice to ensure our key assets are monitored and protected effectively.”

The resulting system integrates communications, surveillance and monitoring technologies tailored to each substation environment. Starlink connectivity was introduced to overcome limited reception in remote locations and support live camera monitoring across sites.

The installation includes 360-degree cameras that provide panoramic surveillance coverage while reducing the number of devices, cabling, power consumption and software licensing required compared with traditional multi-camera layouts. Thermal cameras were also installed to monitor equipment temperature, allowing MainPower to identify developing faults early and reduce the need for physical inspections.

Battery backup systems ensure continued monitoring capability during power interruptions, while all sites are integrated into a central monitoring interface at MainPower headquarters, giving operators real-time visibility of multiple substations from a single screen.

According to Battson, the system delivers operational benefits across safety, response and efficiency.

“This approach will strengthen safety, help reduce unnecessary travel, improve response times, create a strong deterrent to vandalism and theft, as well as lowering operational costs – all while ensuring reliable service for our communities,” he said.

“The solution was rolled out efficiently with a minimum of hassle or intervention. There were synergies with our communications upgrade programme, saving costs during the rollout.

“The footprint on sites is small, but the benefit is considerable, our control room now has real time visibility of all sites, which proved valuable during recent unsettled weather.”

Battson said MainPower selected ADT following a competitive process evaluating technology capability, pricing and delivery experience.

“ADT provided the best response in terms of technology, pricing, and a proven record of delivering complex projects,” he said. “The ADT team fully understood our scope and tailored their offering to our requirements.”

“We appreciated their collaborative and partnership-focussed approach, which was flexible and adaptable as our requirements were fine-tuned during the pre-delivery phase. We also valued their willingness to integrate our Starlink communications requirements to save our communities money by delivering both systems at once.”
