The key upgrade is the addition of AV1, an open-source video encoding standard from the Alliance for Open Media. Thanks to support for AV1 and enhanced image processing, Axis said ARTPEC-9 delivers “high-quality video with best-in-class bitrate”.
Combined with Axis Zipstream, AV1 streamlines video both on-premises and in the cloud. In addition, ARTPEC-9 powers advanced analytics applications that detect objects earlier and analyze events more precisely. AV1 is currently supported by AXIS Camera Station.
ARTPEC-9 also enhances Axis’ existing imaging technologies like Axis Lightfinder 2.0 and Axis Forensic WDR for low light and backlit environments.
Cybersecurity is at the core of ARTPEC-9’s design. Features like secure boot and signed OS ensure that devices remain protected from cyber threats. Additionally, since ARTPEC-9 is developed in-house, Axis retains full control over the production process, strengthening device security.
“With ARTPEC-9, we are focused on making network video more adaptable to the diverse needs of our customers, while improving efficiency and security,” says Johan Paulsson, chief technology officer at Axis Communications.
“By designing our SoC in-house, we maintain full control over the production process, ensuring the quality and cybersecurity standards our customers rely on.”
According to Axis, providers of major video management solutions, like Genetec and Milestone, will be adding support for AV1, with further developments already underway.
