Comtex Security and EACS Secures Port Kembla Energy Terminal For Squadron Energy.
Comtex Secures Port Kembla Energy Terminal — Security integrator Comtex Security and Defence was engaged by Squadron Energy in 2022 to design and implement an integrated electronic security system for the Port Kembla Energy Terminal.
According to Jason Fitzmaurice of Comtex, Squadron Energy selected the company based on its track record in delivering and maintaining electronic security solutions for hazardous area facilities.
The project involved a detailed design, supply and installation of multiple integrated security components, including perimeter fence detection, CCTV surveillance, electronic access control systems (EACS), communication networks, and a public address and general alarm (PAGA) system. McConnell Dowell was contracted separately for procurement and construction of supporting utilities, with final commissioning completed by Comtex in December 2024.

Central to the solution is the Intrepid perimeter fence detection system supplied locally by Perimeter Systems Australia, which uses IP-based POE technology MicroPoint-POE-S solution to detect and precisely locate intrusions along the facility’s 700-metre boundary with an accuracy of approximately 1 metre. The system employs proprietary algorithms to differentiate genuine intrusions from environmental disturbances, such as weather or vehicle traffic.
The Intrepid system is integrated with Inner Range’s Integriti security management platform, which processes alarms and activates strategically positioned Hanwha 4K PTZ cameras via a high-level integration with Milestone XProtect software running on a Moxa industrial network. The Hanwha cameras provide complete surveillance coverage of the site perimeter and automatically track detected intruders using built-in AI.
“Our client was particularly impressed with the accuracy and integration capabilities of the Intrepid detection system“

Access control on-site utilises the integrated Aiphone IX system at entry and exit points, as well as muster locations, facilitating remote monitoring and management when the terminal is unmanned. Further integration connects Integriti with Eaton’s Sonix PAGA system, enabling remote control of onsite safety alerts, and providing bi-directional data exchange with the site’s SCADA system.
“We are very proud of this end-to-end solution and are delighted to see the completed system in use, meeting or exceeding all requirements,” Jason Fitzmaurice said. “Our client was particularly impressed with the accuracy and integration capabilities of the Intrepid detection system.”
