The lab, positioned adjacent to the passenger security area in SFO’s international terminal concourse A, offers a lane for evaluating existing and emerging security technologies and products. According to a press release, one of the biggest benefits GE hopes to see from this lab is an improvement in security with the eventual elimination of the need for passengers to remove their shoes and coats, as well as cell phones and other items from their pockets, or laptop computers from their bags. In its current set-up, the lab will examine the benefits of three emerging technologies, including millimeter wave and quadruple resonance for scanning passengers and their shoes for the presence of the threat objects. The lab isn’t being used for screening actual passengers, but may be used in the future for public testing.
