Hikvision DS-2TD1217-6/PA Bi-Spectrum Turret Camera is a thermal and optical bi-spectrum camera equipped with built-in GPU supporting intelligent behaviour analysis algorithm that can do high-precision VCA detection and generate real-time alarms.

We got a look at the Hikvision DS-2TD1217-6/PA bi-spectrum turret camera at SecTech Roadshow and came away impressed with just how much tech Hikvision’s engineers have crammed in. Observing the electronic security industry, you’re often waiting for manufacturers to synthesise multiple functionalities in affordable devices able to knock the socks of SMEs and thoughtful homeowners – this camera delivers on the promise of recent developments.

There’s a laundry list of specifications that we’ll go through when we review the camera – instead let’s just hit the stand-out qualities. Price is the big one – cost is a bit over $A600, which is very pointy for what you’re getting with this camera. Image processing technology offers linear, histogram, self-adaptive thermal AGC mode, DDE, and 3D DNR for challenging environments.

This camera combines a 256 x 192 resolution, 12μm, VOx UFPA, NETD <40mK (25C, F1.0, 8mm focal length) thermal sensor with an optical sensor that’s 1/2.7-inch, features progressive scan, resolution of 2688 x 1520 pixels, has integrated IR (15m), integrated white light (30m) and a 118-degree wideangle view from its stubby 2.2mm fixed lens.

With a bi-spectrum system like this you’d expect video content analysis to be paramount. The unit does vehicle and human classification, alerts on temperature exception alarm for fire prevention from -20C to 550C and has a smoke detection algorithm. Thermal fire detection is very appealing in many applications, given how discerning it can be, and how early it can detect conditions that may lead to fire.

Power consumption is 12V DC with a 0.5A 6W maximum draw. Working temperature is excellent for an IP66 rated turret – it’s -40C to 65C, and there’s TVS 4000V lightning protection, surge protection and voltage transient protection. This turret is not tiny but it’s quite compact at 138.3mm × 138.3mm × 123.1mm, while the poly and metal build weighs in at 940g.

There’s more to say about the camera but it’s probably easier for techs to take a look at their local distributor – they’ll see a nice fusion of technologies that are well proven in security and safety applications and would translate into light industrial, SMEs, rural applications and more, where fire was a serious part of site risk demanding real time management.
