Honeywell Protecting Eneabba Rare Earth Refinery With Experion PKS Distributed Control System.

Honeywell Protecting Eneabba Rare Earth Refinery – Honeywell has been selected to design and implement an integrated controls and safety system for Iluka Resources’ Eneabba rare earth refinery in Western Australia.

The refinery, supported by a strategic partnership between the Australian Government and Iluka, will be the first fully integrated rare earths facility in Australia, producing materials critical to defence systems, electric vehicles, robotics, renewable energy technologies, and industrial applications.

Honeywell will supply its Experion PKS distributed control system, universal operation controllers (UOC), and advanced remote-control systems. This integrated solution is designed to provide plant-wide control, enhance operational efficiency, and improve safety. Honeywell will also deliver cybersecurity protections for both onsite and cloud operations. The automation systems will enable real-time data analytics to support quicker decision-making and improved production uptime.

“The Eneabba rare earths refinery is a significant project that underscores the importance of expanding the critical minerals sector in Australia and diversifying the rare earths supply chain,” said Craig Renner, project director at Iluka Resources.

“As a partner in this endeavour, Honeywell brings decades of automation domain expertise to increase productivity at the refinery while keeping our most important assets, our workers, safe.”

The Eneabba refinery, which has an estimated capital cost between $A1.7 and 1.8 billion, is expected to produce up to 6250 tonnes annually of separated neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, and terbium oxides. Commissioning of the refinery is expected in 2027.

According to Pramesh Maheshwari, president of Honeywell Process Solutions, the company’s partnership with Iluka demonstrates how automation is a key driver of the global energy transition supply chain.

“With Honeywell’s extensive expertise in automation, Iluka will be equipped with the necessary tools to enhance the safety and efficiency of its operations, which are vital for supporting a more sustainable future,” said Maheshwari.
