Main Roads Western Australia has released a request for information from suppliers on capabilities to gather analytics on live CCTV video streams.

Main Roads is in the process of installing CCTV throughout the metropolitan area as part of the development of Perth’s Intelligent Transport Systems. The cameras provide valuable real time information on road and traffic conditions to the trained operators at the Traffic Operations Centre, which monitors them 24 hours per day.

Video images from the various camera sites are also broadcast on this web site as part of Traffic and Road Information. The images are updated at regular intervals to provide up-to-date visual information on traffic conditions covering the freeway system and other major roads in the metropolitan area. The CCTV network is constantly being expanded to provide wider coverage of the road network.

The analytics would support operations of MRWA’s Intelligent Transport System (ITS), an integration solution comprising sensing, computer and communication technologies to manage transport problems. MRWA utilises various information gathering technologies in managed freeways, including electronic tolling, driver information through GPS systems, CCTV and variable message signs.

“To assist road users we gather and provide ITS data through a number of mechanisms including traffic cameras, freeway speeds, road conditions around the state and congestion levels,” said MRWA. “Devices such as vehicle detectors and CCTV cameras provide real-time traffic information and visibility of road conditions. They are used by us to detect, verify and manage incidents and congestion on the road network.”

The closing date for the MRWA CCTV analytics ROI is October 2, 2019.
