New SmartBolt SBM1 NFC Smart Mortise Lock Is A Battery-Powered UL Fire-Rated, BHMA Grade 1 Single-Egress Smart Mortise Lock.

New SmartBolt SBM1 NFC Smart Mortise Lock – SmartBolt has released the SBM1 smart mortise lock, a concealed-battery, NFC-operated lockset designed to fit standard metal door preparations without modification.

The SBM1 NFC Smart Mortise Lock is a UL fire-rated, BHMA Grade 1 single-egress lock intended for retrofit and new installations, combining mobile credential access, automated locking and integrated door status functionality in a single device. You’ll need to check that this lock meets local standards, but the form factor and functionality are very appealing.

The SBM1 is built around a concealed rechargeable lithium battery system, removing the need for external battery packs. Charging is via USB-C, with typical battery life rated at 12 to 15 months. The lock includes low battery alerts via LED and mobile app, along with an external USB-C jump port for emergency power. Primary access is via NFC at 13.56MHz, with support for Apple and Google Wallet, while secondary access is provided via Bluetooth 5.2 and Thread. A physical key override is included.

A key feature of the SBM1 is the E-Toggle trim control, which uses time-of-flight sensing and an accelerometer to enable wave-to-toggle operation between secured and passage modes. The lock also incorporates a TimeSense module that provides door position status without a separate door contact, simplifying installation and reducing reliance on external sensors. An LED indicator provides visual feedback of lock status.

The lock supports automatic deadbolt engagement and is access control system ready. It is designed for standard mortise preparations without pocket modification and is field reversible. Backset options include 2-3/4-inch standard and 2-1/2-inch optional configurations, with support for standard door thickness of 1-3/4 inches and optional 2-1/4 inches. The unit uses a standard ANSI 4-7/8-inch strike.

The SBM1 is tested to more than 800,000 cycles and operates across a temperature range of -29C to 66C. The lock is ADA-compliant and FCC certified for wireless operation. Finish options include satin chrome, satin brass and matte black – there are additional custom finishes available – you’ll need to check the website for those.

Note that SBM1 was only just released at ISC West, so availability in ANZ is as open question – you can learn more here, learn about becoming a partner here, or read more SEN news here.
