Stentofon Secures Spirit Of Tasmania – Stentofon delivers security innovation to support Spirit of Tasmania’s Move to GeelongPort.

For more than a century and a half, Geelong Port has been a vital component of its community and landscape, playing a significant role in the local economy and social structure. Facilitating trade for numerous major industries in and around Geelong and serving as a hub for bulk commodity imports and exports for Victoria, the port remains a cornerstone of regional commerce.

Notably, in collaboration with Spirit of Tasmania, GeelongPort undertook a major 2-year project to substantially redevelop the Corio Quay South precinct to incorporate the new home of the iconic passenger ship Spirit of Tasmania, replacing its previous home of nearly 40 years at Station Pier in Port Melbourne.

Operating under the regulations stipulated in the Maritime Transport Security Act 2003 and its corresponding directives, GeelongPort has undergone remarkable transformations to adapt to evolving needs.

Additionally, compliance with security regulations for Australia’s ports is now paramount. GeelongPort has designated restricted land and sea zones within its jurisdiction. Under the Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Act 2003, unauthorised access to designated areas is prohibited, and stringent penalties are in place to deter infringements.

Managed by a dedicated project team, the 12-hectare precinct’s construction involved multiple phases, including marine infrastructure, land-side construction, security infrastructure, and the development of passenger facilities. The resulting state-of-the-art terminal boasts amenities such as a new vehicle marshalling area, additional parking facilities, staff and crew accommodation, and recreational areas for Spirit of Tasmania passengers.

Securing these facilities demanded capable and robust solutions in all areas of electronic security, including access control communications,” said Stentofon’s Johnathan Porthill.

Zenitel products are the dominant critical communications product for seagoing vessels worldwide and the pre-eminent brand of choice on land where clear, reliable security communications are important, particularly in environments where exposure to the elements and background noise pose a challenge.”

For that reason, TCIS-2 intercom stations and Zenitel remote relays were specified and integrated onto the network to enhance security communications at designated access control stations, including entry and exit points for onshore car parks and Spirit of Tasmania staff and crew accommodation facilities.

Trouble With Electric Strikes In Access Control Applications.

Trouble With Electric Strikes – What can we look for during commissioning to ensure we see trouble with electric strikes before it happens?

A: Properly installed, electric strikes are reliable, highly secure and capable of delivering a high level of situational awareness to security teams via the access control and security management system supporting them.

A few things to consider – when you’re putting in door hardware ensure strike plates have a slight forward and back play when the mortise is held in the strike. This ensures an overload of the coils won’t result from lock friction.

It’s also vital that lock and striking plate are compatible and there must be proper mortise penetration. Also be sure that electric strike plates are heavy duty, with continuous operation-rated coils if required.

Installing the right lock for the job is important, too. There are applications where a strike is not your best option and using one may compromise security and/or the access control function. For instance, some doors should use electromagnetic locks or high security electronic bolts.

Even if a strike is the right choice, you need to make sure it’s correctly rated for the application in terms of fire resistance, holding force, durability, side load, pre-load, speed of operation and power draw, including sleep mode.

High security locks will have monitoring features like door status sensor and lock status sensor, considerably higher holding forces of up to 1500kg or more, extension lips to ensure they can’t snag clothing, long fire ratings and long warranties. Given the low cost of high security strikes it’s hard to imagine using anything else, in SEN’s opinion.

Installers of access control systems may not be responsible for emergency evacuation procedures of a facility but it’s important emergency exit facilities are included as part of any access control solution.

Taking this into account make sure you set electronic locking devices to fail open in the event of power loss – don’t just rely on default settings. To this end you want making this selection to be as easy in the field as possible.

1200 x 1024 Thermal Imaging Will Change Game In Many Low Light Surveillance Applications.

1200 x 1024 Thermal Imaging Changing Game – High resolution thermal imaging with 1200 x 1024 uncooled microbolometers is going to change the game in low light security surveillance applications, significantly enhancing the potential of VCA and AI suites.

High resolution thermal imaging uses longwave infrared between 8-14µm – the images in the video linked are from Axiom Optics’ Ceres V 1280 thermal camera operating at 12µm.

According to Axiom, the use of 1280 x 1024 pixels allows higher “intrascene dynamic range applications while detecting temperature differences below 60mK”.

Radiometric measurements with absolute temperature readings are available on the Ceres T series, which feature on-board calibration packs for accurate measurement from -20 to 400C.

1200 x 1024 Thermal Imaging Changing Game

Obviously, Massachusetts-based Axiom is not the only player in the 1200 x 1024-pixel thermal imaging range – there’s a wave of high-resolution thermal surveillance devices coming from multiple developers.

What sets these imagers apart is the level of detail they can glean from large scenes and the improvements to VCA detection and reliability this increased detail is certain to deliver.

Looking through 1200 and 1024-pixel scenes, contrast and sharpness are other level, compared to low-res thermal imagers, in some cases they impart a sense of 3D onto complex city scenes that’s something to behold.

Given scientific thermal imagery is at 2560 x 2048 pixels, it’s impossible to imagine a future in which high resolution thermal surveillance image streams won’t play an increasingly important role in intrusion detection, video surveillance solutions, law enforcement and search and rescue applications.

What is PIR?

PIR sensors are able to sense motion by converting IR to an electric current which exceeds a circuit threshold to trigger an alarm event at an alarm panel. They are almost always used to detect whether a human being has moved in or out of the range of the sensor. PIRs are usually quite small, low-power, and easy to use, with the added benefit of not wearing out quickly. For that reason they are mostly found in various security systems and gadgets used in homes or businesses. They are usually called PIR, “Passive Infrared”, “Pyroelectric”, or “IR motion” sensors.

How Does A PIR Work?

PIR Sensors

PIRs are made up of a pyroelectric sensor comprising a crystal of tantallum (which looks like round metal device with a crystal material in the centre), which can detect very low levels of infrared radiation. PIR sensors contain processors that allow them to recognise the particular electrical signals generated when a human moves in front of the PIR lens in a way that breaks programmed bands of detection in a sequence that can be counted over time.

Medeco eCLIQ Spark Key From ASSA ABLOY Generates Own Energy.

Medeco eCLIQ Spark Key – Medeco eCLIQ Spark Key from ASSA ABLOY is a battery-free key that generates its own energy that can be used with the Medeco eCLIQ wireless electronic locking system.

Medeco eCLIQ is a system that retrofits into existing doors and locks delivering scalable wireless access control with AES encryption. Audit information recorded in both the lock and key shows time-and-date stamped records of every event, including authorized accesses and unauthorized attempts.

With eCLIQ, the key provides all power to the cylinder, eliminating the need for any hard wiring or power supply. During installation techs simply remove the existing mechanical cylinder and install the IP67-rated eCLIQ cylinder, which can be installed in the most rugged environments.

The system offers comprehensive key management, with access rights and schedules able to be changed immediately, remotely, and easily by the web manager. Communication between the key and cylinder including transfer of power and audit trails, takes less than 0.3 seconds.

Until now, the system has incorporated the eCLIQ Connect Key, which is powered by Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), communicates with a smartphone or tablet for authorization changes, and incorporates a battery that lasts many years but must ultimately be replaced. Now there’s the option of eCLIQ Spark Key – the first battery-free eCLIQ key that generates its own energy.

The energy required for the locking function and for checking access authorizations is generated by the key during insertion into the cylinder. Data is transferred between the eCLIQ locking cylinder and the eCLIQ Spark Key with the usual Medeco high level of protection against manipulation and sophisticated attacks.

Medeco eCLIQ Spark was new at ISC West – you can learn more about the key and availability from ASSA ABLOY, or from local distributors. There’s more SEN news here.
