Security Managers: Wages Up 8.3 Per Cent

0

Security professionals employed by publicly traded companies and who are managing facilities in more than one country saw the greatest increase; the sectors that saw salaries rise the fastest were entertainment, hospitality, and gaming. A total of 3,861 valid responses were received, and of those, 1,771 supplied both their 2002 and 2003 salaries for direct comparison.

Certifications definitely enhance earnings. CPPs earned a median of $80,000—11 percent more than the overall median for respondents ($73,000). More than a quarter of those surveyed either had a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) designation from ASIS, or were working on attaining it. Four percent held the Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) designation and six percent held certifications from other professional sources.

Among other points of note 1,752 respondents addressed whether security budgets were up, down, or about the same from the prior year. One-third said budgets were up.

Almost half of respondents (45 percent) reported that their security budgets had remained the same from 2002 to 2003, and 22 percent said theirs had decreased. Nearly 40 percent of respondents worked for companies with gross revenues of more than $500 million.

Gordon MacSween, Managing Director at Vision Systems, says:

“We are already market leaders in detecting threats with our VESDA range of very early warning smoke detectors and our ADPRO range of video security systems. Our next step will be to further integrate the Millbank voice response products to complement our offering by adding a response capability.

“This may be the automatic announcement of a staged evacuation in the event of a fire or preventing damage or loss by telling an intruder that they have been detected, police called and for them to leave the premises.”

Neil Voce, sales and business development director voice response systems at Vision Systems, says; “We are responding to a need among our customers for an integrated early warning solution.

“We can see significant revenue opportunities to be gained from a truly integrated systems approach over the coming years.”

Pakistan Goes For Smart Passports Ids

The new program, headed by NADRA and sponsored by the Pakistani Government, is designed to mitigate terrorism and ethnic violence by helping the country enhance national security and prevent problems related to identity theft, fraud and the use of unauthorized identity documents.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

In the wake of heightened concerns over the misuse of identity and identity documents, the government of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags” />Pakistan has taken a proactive approach to the problem by implementing smart, machine readable radio frequency ID (RFID) passports and national ID cards that integrate multiple biometrics.

NADRA now issues state-of-the-art, machine readable passports and national IDs that include face and finger biometric technologies to ensure authorized applicants are uniquely tied to the secure identity document issued.

“Addressing the growing problem of identity theft and fraud is critical in the Middle East and South Asian countries. We have taken significant steps in Pakistan to protect our citizens and show social responsibility to the international community by verifying a person is who he or she claims to be before allowing that individual to enter and exit the country,” said Brigadier (Retd.) Saleem Ahmad Moeen, chairman of NADRA.

“After an extensive evaluation of various face recognition options, we selected Viisage based on the strength of its technology, the overall company approach and responsiveness to our needs.”

Chairman Moeen continued, “Our partnership and joint strategy is already receiving recognition. Recently, I presented the new passport solution at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Conference in Montreal, Canada and we were noted as a leader in implementing ICAO’s vision of a smart passport, integrating RFID, face recognition and fingerprint technologies.”

NADRA will use Viisage’s FaceTOOLS(R) product to conduct a one-to-one face recognition search against an applicant’s recorded image in the national ID database.

Additionally, Viisage’s FaceEXPLORER(R) will be used for one-to-many checking to cleanse the national ID database, ensure that duplicates are uncovered, and screen images against watch lists.

Pakistan’s national ID database contains more than 40 million images, making this one of the largest worldwide face recognition projects to date.

After launching its Machine Readable Passport in Pakistan, NADRA is now in a position to market its product internationally. The product contains a unique 2-D bar code and encrypted data in the chip, which has biometrics and other security features.

“NADRA is a valued partner and our visions have aligned perfectly in helping Pakistan protect its citizens and secure its borders,” said Bernard Bailey, president and CEO of Viisage.

“Pakistan’s national ID and passport program demonstrates leadership in implementing advanced technologies to solve identity problems and further establishes a standard for other countries to follow.”

Dedicated Micros Adds CD Writer To DVRs

0

Particularly suited to small retailers who need to provide footage to the police on a regular basis, an integral CD writer provides an immediate way to copy both image and audio data off the DVR’s hard disk for a complete record of any given incident.

The new versions offer the same look and feel as the existing Eco4 and D4 models for ease of installation training and use. And since no external CD recorders, SCSI cables or power supplies are required, installation time and costs are kept to a minimum.

Each CD created includes playback software that runs automatically on a standard PC, without needing to invest in any additional equipment or install extra software.

Dedicated Micros’ Retail Solutions (RS) software can be supplied with D4 CD – allowing recorded video to be associated with text data from EPOS systems and instantly copied to CD, helping to combat instances of staff fraud such as under-ringing and sweet-hearting.

The new 300GB variants of Eco4 and D4 offer 2 months out-of-the-box recording.

Rexel Is Up For Sale

0

PPR has announced that it is entering into exclusive negotiations with the consortium formed by Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, Eurazeo and Merrill Lynch Private Equity for the sale of its full interest in the share capital of Rexel.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

The consortium’s offer underscores its members’ confidence in the significant growth potential of Rexel, whose strategic initiatives and effective reorganization, spearheaded by the management team over the past two years, has resulted in sharply improved financial performance.

This offer is relative to the full interest held by the PPR Group in the share capital of Rexel, or 73.45%, and is based on a firm price of € 38.50 per Rexel share, dividend included. Minority shareholders should be offered the same guaranteed price through a mandatory tender offer (“garantie de cours”).

Rexel is the world’s largest electrical specialist. It has significant presence in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags” />Australia through its electrical wholesaling outlets, as well being the parent of Rexel Security, the local distributor of Panasonic CCTV equipment.

It’s not likely a change of ownership would have significant short term impact on the company’s Australian operations.

Tyco Wins Us70 Million Defense Contract

Known as the General Service Respirator (GSR), the kit includes a newly designed mask and filter along with associated products. The Scott GSR will be issued to all UK Service personnel and entitled civilians.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

The initial contract is valued in excess of $70 million. With replacements, spare parts, and systems for new recruits, the potential total value of the contract, including the service life of the Scott GSR, is expected to be in excess of $200 million.

“We are obviously delighted to have been awarded this contract and clearly it places Tyco at the pinnacle of military respiratory systems design. The opportunity to develop this technology with appropriate military customers is expected to generate significant revenue for the company,” said Ron Krisanda, President Tyco Safety Products.

This contract award follows a detailed 14-month assessment phase and a subsequent competitive selection program. The British MoD’s extensive testing confirmed that the Scott GSR is “No mere gas mask. It will give our troops an unparalleled level of protection from all manner of threats-from biological and chemical weaponry to industrial chemicals and other hazardous airborne materials,” according to Lord Bach, UK Minister for Defense Procurement.

Scott’s GSR was designed and tested to provide improved integration with current and future weapons systems and to reduce the physiological and psychological burdens on wearers.

Now Dedicated Micros Is Getting Into Access Control

As part of the project digital video multiplexer recorders (DVMRs) manufactured by Dedicated Micros will be combined with the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags” />Torrance, Calif., company’s LiNC-NET access control system.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

The idea is that end users will be able to verify a user’s ID photo with a live digital image from the DVMR and in the event of an alarm, images can be displayed.

“We believe this new union will provide added value for managing video,” says Dedicated Micros vice president of marketing Don Taylor.
