The Outsiders: New Axis P1347-E

TYPICAL Axis in terms of features and quality, this well thought out 5MP external camera is designed with the performance and toughness to handle external applications. With narrower viewing angles, the camera can provide extremely good detail for identification purposes and for defining distant objects. AXIS P1347/-E network cameras are supported by the industry’s largest base of video management software and the unit’s P-Iris technology enables automatic and precise control of the iris position to optimise depth of field and lens resolution for optimal image sharpness. P-Iris is a new type of iris control that is both automatic and precise. Unlike a DC-iris lens, the main task of the P-Iris control is not to continuously adjust the flow of light through the lens. The primary objective of P-Iris is to improve image quality by enabling the optimal iris position to be set so that the central and best-performing part of the lens is used most of the time. This position, expressed as a specific f-number, is where the lens performs optimally, where many optical errors are reduced, and where image quality (with regards to contrast, resolution and depth of field) is at its best. This is the default setting in a network camera with P-Iris.Working in conjunction with P-Iris is the use of electronic means — gain (which is amplification of the signal level) and exposure time — to manage slight changes in lighting conditions and to further optimize an image. This allows the optimal iris position to be maintained as long as possible.

“The primary objective of P-Iris is to improve image quality by enabling the optimal iris position to be set so that the central and best-performing part of the lens is used most of the time”

In situations when the preferred iris position and the camera’s electronic processing capabilities cannot adequately correct the exposure, a P-Iris camera will automatically instruct the iris to move to a different position. In dark conditions, for example, the iris will fully open. In bright situations, a camera with P-Iris is programmed to limit the closing of the iris to a position that avoids diffraction or blurring. This means that in all lighting conditions, P-Iris can automatically make adjustments to deliver optimal image quality. DC-iris lenses are also supported for backward compatibility. These day and night cameras deliver 5-megapixel resolution video at 12 frames per second. They also support 16:9, HDTV 1080p full frame rate video. To help minimise bandwidth and storage needs, the cameras provide digital pan/tilt/zoom and multi-view streaming, which enables several cropped view areas to be streamed simultaneously. The cameras support multiple, individually configurable video streams in H.264 and motion JPEG. The P1347-E’s easy installation features include remote back focus for fine-tuning the focus from a computer, and pixel counter, which helps verify that the pixel resolution of an object fulfils regulatory or customer requirements for identification purposes. The AXIS 1347-E supports Power over Ethernet, which simplifies installation since only one cable is required for video and power. Other supported features include two-way audio, audio detection, active tampering alarm, input/output ports, and built-in SD/SDHC card slot for local storage of recordings. The IP66-rated AXIS P1347-E, which comes with a wall mount bracket, sunshield and Ethernet cable, is protected from dust, rain, snow and sun, and can operate in temperatures from -40 °C to 50°C (-40 °F to 122 °F). AXIS P1347/-E network cameras are supported by the industry’s largest base of video management software through the Axis Application Development Partner programme as well as by AXIS camera station. Fact file: Features of the new Axis P1347-E* Advanced P-Iris control* IP66-rated with sunshield * Simultaneous H.264 and Motion JPEG* Digital PTZ and multi-view streaming* Enhanced video motion detection* Audio detection * Detection of camera tamper (blocking and spray)* Power over Ethernet (IEEE 802.3af), eliminating the need for power cables and reducing installation costs.* Two-way audio support* Security and network features, IPv6 & QoS* Open Application Programming Interface (API).
