Zenitel Intercom And PA Platform Deployed At Yarra Trams Preston Depot.
Zenitel Intercom And PA Platform Deployed At Yarra Trams – Zenitel has delivered a site-wide intercom and public address solution at Yarra Trams’ Preston Depot in Melbourne, providing integrated communications across operational, security and emergency functions.
The deployment centres on a Zenitel AlphaCom-ICX platform, supporting intercom, multi-zone public address and integration with third-party systems. The system is configured to manage communications across gates, doors and field locations, while also supporting paging and alarm functions.
At the core of the system are dual display master stations with gooseneck microphones, providing centralised control from the Starters Office and security office. These units support high key density operation, with up to 90 DAK keys per station, allowing operators to manage multiple communication zones and endpoints from a single interface.
Field communications are delivered via a range of Zenitel Turbine intercom units. TCIS-2 units are deployed outside the perimeter fence, using Flowire to extend connectivity across distance. TCIS-3 units are installed at staff and vehicle entry gates, supporting communication with security and acting as local microphone panels.
TCIS-4 and TCIS-5 units are deployed across the operational field, enabling drivers and maintenance personnel to communicate directly with the Starters Office regarding vehicle movements. TCIS-6 units are installed at public entry points, allowing users to select appropriate call destinations.
Integration with life safety systems is achieved through TKIS-2 units interfaced to the EWIS system across fire zones, enabling PA announcements to be delivered via emergency infrastructure. Additional ESLII-10C and 10H speakers are deployed in administrative and workshop areas not covered by EWIS.
A key operational requirement was the ability to make local announcements without feedback. This is achieved using a store-and-deploy function, where users press and hold a button to record a message, which is then broadcast on release. This approach removes live microphone feedback and ensures clear audio in high-noise environments.
The system integrates with Genetec via a high-level interface, allowing the security office to monitor access control and CCTV events alongside intercom activity.
“A smooth delivery of devices was made over the course of the project at the Preston Depot,” said Zenitel. “The Starters Office now has full communication control over the operation of the site, including vehicle movement, staff location and emergency alarms.”
“The security office has visibility over all access control and CCTV triggers from the Gate and Door Intercom. Staff can make PA announcements to their local area via either a Desk Master Station or rugged single button Paging Panel with crystal clear and loud communication.”
The system architecture is based on IP communications, with SIP PBX compatibility supporting integration with standard VoIP infrastructure. The AlphaCom-ICX platform provides CCoIP (Critical Communication over IP), supporting prioritised and resilient communications across the site.
The Preston Depot deployment supports more than 90 devices and is designed to provide consistent, site-wide communication across operational, security and emergency use cases.
