Security Officer Killed At Westfield Bondi In Stabbing Attack.
Security Officer Killed At Westfield Bondi Junction – A security officer was killed and another seriously injured at Westfield Bondi Junction responding to a stabbing attack which killed 6 and injured 12.
Westfield security officer, Faraz Tahir, was working his first full day shift at the centre, when he and another security officer who is currently in ICU at RPA Hospital were attacked on the 4th floor of the mall.
The attacker was later shot and killed by police inspector, Amy Scott, who was responding to early reports of an incident by herself.
Three victims remain in a critical condition – a man, a woman and a 9-month old baby.
According to the Ahmadiyya community, 30 year old Tahir, sought refuge in Australia a year ago, fleeing persecution in his home country of Pakistan.
“He quickly became an integral part of our community, known for his unwavering dedication and kindness,” said Aqeel Ibraheem in a statement.
“Faraz was not only a valued member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Australia but also actively contributed to the charitable endeavours of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth organisation.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Faraz’s family and loved ones during this difficult time, as well as with all the other victims and their families affected by this senseless act of violence.
“We extend our deepest condolences and stand in solidarity with the broader community as we come together to support one another in the face of tragedy.”
Westfield Bondi Junction, which many Australian security professionals will be familiar with having attended surveillance camera comparisons in the mall over many years, is one of the most security conscious shopping precincts in Australia.
The huge shopping centre has comprehensive CCTV coverage and a proactive security team with highly developed procedures and close communications with local police.
Security Officer Killed At Westfield
While details are still emerging it’s clear the security team initiated emergency evacuation procedures and internal and external response procedures, while risks were further ameliorated by retailers who pulled down security shutters and protected shoppers in backrooms during the attack.
It’s certain that had this event been perpetrated at any other Australian shopping mall on a Saturday afternoon it would have resulted in a significantly higher death toll.
The attack at Westfield Bondi will also have taken a heavy emotional toll on a security team that has been in a state of high alert for more than 6 months – security professionals are encouraged to reach out to colleagues at Westfield Bondi Junction to offer support.
