Challenger IP LAN Adaptor

OPERATIONALLY the GE IP LAN Adaptor provides an IP connection between a Challenger panel and its LAN devices such as Remote Arming Stations (RAS) and Data Gathering Panels (including Intelligent Access Controllers) reducing the need for dedicated wiring of expensive two-pair twisted, shielded data cable. The TS0098 also enables physically separate segments of the Challenger RS-485 LAN to be linked together over an IP network, either to extend distance or inexpensively utilise existing IT infrastructure. It is perfect for connecting a panel to a remotely located RAS, DGP or Door/Lift Controller where it is costly to run cable but where IP connections are readily available (subject to network performance requirements).TS0098 modules provide securely-encrypted IP communications via a unique 128-bit encryption key. TS0098 modules are configured as either the start of line module (SLM) or an end-of-line module (ELM). The SLM connects to the Challenger panel while the ELMs provide IP links for all of a Challenger system’s LAN devices. An SLM can support up to 31 ELMs to include 15 DGPs and 16 RASs. The TS0098 can be configured easily and conveniently over the IP network via a web browser. According to GE, installers wondering whether or not the IP LAN adaptor can be used with a system can use a free Challenger IP LAN Adaptor Network Tester application to determine if the network environment is compatible with use of TS0098 modules where data passes through more than a single hub. As a general rule, if the SLM and ELM are connected through the same router then there’s no need for the Network Tester.  It’s possible to run a Challenger LAN over any IP network with the limiting factor being network latency. Typically latency is high over wide area networks and GE says this means the Challenger LAN should be used on local networks where things like reliability, latency and backup power can be managed properly.  In terms of physical installation, the IP LAN Adaptor is simple. There is no physical connection to the LAN Adaptor. The IP LAN Adaptors have a built-in Web server which gives installers the ability to configure the IP address using a web browser that can only be accessed using passwords and is dipswitch lockable. Importantly, there are no firmware upgrades required and the IP LAN Adaptor is a BB Challenger board that fits into any Challenger enclosure designed to handle this size board. Additionally, an SLM can be located in the same housing as a Challenger panel, while ELMs can be installed in metal universal enclosures and there is a new slim plastic housing available.

Fact file:

* IP Communication for Challenger LAN* 128-bit AES secure encrypted comms* Connect Challenger LAN devices RAS, DGP, Door/Lift controllers over IP network infrastructure* Up to 31 ELM modules on a single Challenger LAN for up to 15 DGPs and 16 RASs* Switchable from ELM to SLM* Built-in web server allows convenient device configuration and diagnostics from standard web browser* Network test tool provided to check network latency.
