CISCO Meraki has launched a new product line, the MV21 internal and MV71 external security cameras managed using a web-based dashboard and integrate industrial-grade solid state storage.

Meraki CCTV require no on-premise hardware, no external recording devices and no standalone software packages. Central to this capability is a 128GB solid state drive that stores up to 3 weeks of images streams locally, while allowing remote access.

Each camera has a 3-10mm varifocal lens with remote control, resolution is 720p HD, with H.264 compression and there’s 30m of IR support. Warranty is 3 years.

According to Cicso, less than 50kbps of metadata streams to the cloud per camera when footage is not being viewed, eliminating excessive WAN usage.

In the background, Cisco’s Meraki cloud architecture is built for reliability, security, and scalability. Already supporting over 500,000 customer networks, it features built-in redundancy, advanced security features, and a 99.99 per cent uptime SLA.

Users can select important video segments and export from the dashboard to a shareable and downloadable link. With granular access controls, users can also decide who has access to historical footage and exporting privileges.

There’s no question Meraki is simply beautiful networking gear and the concept of a remotely accessible camera of real quality is very appealing. When it comes to these MV cameras, optical performance and cost are going to be the key factors impacting buyer decisions. ♦
