Diebold Names New President and CEO

Mattes, a former executive for Hewlett-Packard, succeeds Thomas Swidarski, who resigned from his position after the company posted poor earnings in January.
With more than 25 years of experience in the IT and telecommunications industries, Mattes previously worked for Siemens AG. Most recently, he served as senior vice president of global strategic partnerships at Violin Memory, a manufacturer of flash memory computer storage systems.
As senior vice president and general manager of enterprise services for the Americas at HP, Mattes oversaw 40,000 employees and was responsible for roughly $10 billion in revenue, according to a company release.
In his new role, Mattes will head the company, which has been struggling to reinvent itself. In its first quarter report of 2013, Diebold reported a loss of $13.4 million, compared to the $45.2 million the company earned in the same period last year, Cleveland.com reports.
Currently, Diebold is in the midst of a multiyear realignment overhaul, which has forced the company to eliminate 700 jobs in an effort to save up to $150 million in costs. Mattes noted that he plans to expand Diebold’s electronic security business, which brought in $300 million of the firm’s $3 billion in revenue last year, the Wall Street Journal reports.
“I am excited to join Diebold and lead the company at such a critical time,” Mattes says. “The company has taken a number of significant steps to help rejuvenate its business, and I look forward to continuing this work as well as implementing new approaches to strengthen our profile as a technology and service leader.”
