Most Innovative New Perimeter Security Technologies For High Security Applications?
Most Innovative New Perimeter Security Technologies – Does SEN know of any novel or innovative security technologies suited to the high security environments with medium or large perimeters and complex built structures? The solution should conform to the highest security requirements.
A: 3D LiDAR with analytics and detailed mapping is the most fun new perimeter detection solution and in our opinion it’s likely to emerge as a key future perimeter detection and monitoring technology, thanks to its ability to minimise false alarms and unnecessary patrol responses.
3D LiDAR sensors are installed across a site, including overlapping perimeters, to give strong coverage, high accuracy and low false alarm rates. They integrate well with CCTV and alarm systems but typically have dedicated management software, given the complexity of their graphical output and the enormity of their detection capacity.
In terms of suppliers, Quanergy springs to mind but there are other makers. The Quanergy solution operates through 360 degrees and can track up to 600 objects simultaneously per sensor. As mentioned, it integrates with perimeter surveillance cameras, allowing operator to put eyes on events. The LiDAR image can also be meshed with camera views for a composite LiDAR optical image that enhances detail.

3D LiDAR is impervious to weather, darkness and reflections from metal surfaces and can be used on open or broken ground, even around high security structures and streetscapes. Range is a question and likely varies by brand and system. We think Quanergy QTrack covers around 15,000 square metres area per sensor – significant, but you’re not putting in 1 sensor every 1000 metres lne of sight.
The system detects people and vehicles with high accuracy but doesn’t identify faces, so there are no painful privacy issues to wrestle with. The sensors operate as a mesh – we think they need local power but transmit encrypted data via their own secure integrated wireless network.
The technology is proven on big sites. Quanergy already partners with Milestone and Genetec and would link with access control solutions. We’d be surprised if major local manufacturers don’t have integrations in mind or would not bend over backwards to create one for you – it’s a U.S. company – San Jose – so likely Five Eyes compliant potential. Not sure about PSPF or SCEC.
Local distributor is EOS Australia – we think Convergint has installed this solution OS if not locally, so contacting the Convergint engineering team might reveal more in regards to applications for military, aviation and utilities.
We’re taking about very large sites here but Optex Redscan is another solution worth consideration for internal or shorter range external applications. BGW Technologies distributes Redscan locally. It’s got an impressive specification making it ideal for higher security applications.
We also like the Hive drone solution that can generate a camera view from any location across a large industrial or military side in less than a minute. Perimeter security empowered by mature AI technology is going to be a fascinating study over the next 10 years, no doubt.
