Nexus Access Control Launching At Security Expo After Years Of Development By Steve Varney, Vin Lopes and Adam Lopes.

Nexus Access Control Launching At Security Expo – A new ANZ-based access control manufacturer is set to launch at the upcoming security expo in Sydney and what we know about the product sounds seriously interesting for installers, integrators, end users – and competitors.

For a start the Nexus team is led by directors Steve Varney, and Vin and Adam Lopes, with operational management handled by Quenton Knoll. This is a group that needs no introduction – it has pioneering access control DNA.

But if you think the team and its engineers are rusted onto the laurels or technology of yester-year think again. What Nexus is teasing with and what we’ve been told about the product suggests it’s cutting edge in almost every way.

Nexus features distributed intelligence, a fully digital architecture, is lightweight at the edge, is powerful, expandable, flexible, future proof forever, is mobile-first, able to support legacy elements, has great hooks for motivated installers and integrators, and frankly, is scary for incumbents. Varney’s outline of Nexus got my attention and no mistake.

According to Varney, access control systems continue to rely on legacy architecture including plastic credentials, on-site servers, dedicated controller hardware and extensive cabling, despite wider adoption of cloud, mobile and AI technologies across other industries. Although the team is not revealing system specs, Varney’s criticism encapsulates the Nexus solution – it embodies everything traditional solutions do not.

“It’s a reality that a team of industry veterans could no longer ignore,” Varney said. “This lack of change across the sector was a key driver behind our new venture.

“We sat back and looked at the security industry and what we found was that no one is challenging the status quo. The industry has not kept pace with modern IT processes and advancements.”

According to Varney, the industry has focused on incremental improvements to existing architectures rather than rethinking underlying system design, resulting in ongoing challenges around installation cost, infrastructure complexity, scalability and security models.

“Companies with established products and distribution networks have every incentive to improve incrementally and very little incentive to start again,” Varney said. “Innovation requires stepping away from everything that exists.”

According to Varney, the Nexus development approach has been based on a clean-slate design, without the constraints of existing product lines or legacy system requirements.

We’ve had the rare opportunity to design without constraints,” he said. “No legacy products to support. No existing architecture to work around. Just a clean slate and a belief that access control can be re-imagined.

“What we’ve built represents a different way of thinking. But before asking the industry to adopt it, we believe the industry deserves time to understand it, to question it, and to consider what the future of access control should look like.”

Now, there’s a sentence you don’t hear from security manufacturers every day.
