CSIRO Prototype Nanofibre Uniform

CSIRO Prototype Nanofibre Uniform Protects From Chemical And Biochemical Threats.

CSIRO Prototype Nanofibre Uniform – Researchers at Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, have developed a next-generation uniform prototype that employs nanofibres to safeguard wearers from chemical and biological threats.

The lightweight fabric filters out harmful particles while remaining light-weight and breathable, keeping the wearer comfortable in extreme temperatures. The prototype uniform has the potential to significantly improve the level of protection for soldiers and emergency responders.

The secret to the breakthrough lies in nanofibres – incredibly fine filaments at least 100 times thinner than a human hair. These filaments have an extraordinary surface area that prevents harmful aerosol particles from passing through. What sets them apart is their breathability. Unlike traditional protective materials, nanofibre layers allow air to circulate freely – ensuring the wearer remains comfortable even in extreme conditions.

CSIRO Manufacturing Research unit director, Dr Marcus Zipper said the textile innovation was the result of collaboration with industry and research partners, including DMTC.

“Our nanofibre technology, pioneered by CSIRO scientists, has the potential to significantly improve the level of protection soldiers’ uniforms provide and can also be used for non-military applications, including protecting emergency responders and hazmat crews,” Dr Zipper said.

“CSIRO research and development in materials science looks to improve how a particular material functions – we work across a broad range of advanced materials including metals, composites, polymers, adsorbents and nanofibres,” Dr Zipper said.

Funded by the Department of Defence, development of the nanofibre suit prototype was coordinated by DMTC Limited. Also involved in supporting the project were Bruck Textiles, Defence Science and Technology Group, and RMIT University.

Head of program management at DMTC, Deepak Ganga, said the new prototype uniform could deliver a significant leap forward in soldier protection, ensuring better comfort and mobility in harsh environments.

“This project demonstrates the power of collaboration,” Ganga said. “CSIRO’s scientific excellence in nanofibre research has been matched with the expertise of our partners in textiles, defence science, and manufacturing.

“This has resulted in a groundbreaking solution that offers benefits for Australian troops, for the first responder community and, potentially for Australia’s alliance partners,” he said.

Meanwhile, CSIRO project lead, Dr Yen Truong, said key to the prototype’s success lies in nanofibre technology, developed by CSIRO scientists.

“We harnessed the unique properties of nanofibres to create a lightweight fabric that effectively filters out harmful particles while remaining highly breathable,” Dr Truong said.

“In rigorous testing, the prototype surpassed all performance targets for air filtration, air permeability, thermal comfort, and chemical protection.

“This means it effectively filters pollutants from the air, allows for breathability, maintains comfortable temperatures even in extreme conditions, and offers superior protection from hazardous chemicals.”

NSW Government Agrees To Ease Path For Small Suppliers To State’s $A42 Billion Spend.

NSW Government Agrees To Ease Path For Small Suppliers – NSW Government has agreed to the 9 recommendations of an NSW procurement inquiry to make the path easier for smaller suppliers to state’s $42 billion annual spend.

NSW Government agencies will now have additional compliance measures and new standards for managing contracts, providing supplier feedback, and disclosing smaller deals. At the same time there will be a review of standard contracts seeking inequitable requirements that exclude smaller suppliers.

In accepting the recommendations, the NSW Government agrees to work to make spending more responsible and more consistently implemented. There will also be more effort directed towards active job creation and supporting domestic and regional industries.

The NSW Procurement Board, which was found to be “not functioning effectively as an oversight body”, will have new measures to uplift agency compliance and a new and robust compliance and enforcement mechanism.

There will be a review of the agency procurement authority accreditation system that the committee feared could be exploited by consultants. Standard contracts will be reviewed and simplified, as will SME-onerous requirements like insurance and accreditations.

NSW Government supported a call to lower the disclosure threshold for contracts to $100,000, and committed to modernising contract management standards and to set minimums for contract monitoring, retention and storage.

NSW Government also committed to ensuring feedback is provided to all parties involved in a competitive tender bid and said it will establish the first-ever NSW government debarment scheme to ban suppliers that engage in misconduct or abuse of trust.

Finally, NSW Government announced an “if-not, why not” rule that will require government buyers to explain why local suppliers do not win significant contracts.

“The inquiry’s findings demonstrate that the reforms we have already put in place have us on the right path, said Minister for Domestic Manufacturing and Government Procurement, Courtney Houssos.

“There’s clearly more work to be done to make sure more of the NSW Government’s $42 billion spend can go to support local jobs and local industries.”

Bosch Professional Series ISC-PPR1-W16 PIR Detector

Bosch Professional Series ISC-PPR1-W16 PIR Detector
Bosch Professional Series ISC-PPR1-W16 PIR Detector.

Bosch Professional Series ISC-PPR1-W16 PIR Detector With 18 x 25-Metre Coverage.

Bosch Professional Series ISC-PPR1-W16 PIR Detector – Bosch’s New Professional Series ISC-PPR1-W16 PIR Detector with Bosch Sensor Data Fusion and Tri-Focus optics offers 18 x 25-metre (or selectable 8 x 10m) detection coverage.

Designed for large commercial indoor applications, the unit’s sensor data fusion technology ensures that the detector sends alarm conditions based on precise information, while its Bosch Tri-Focus optics eliminate coverage gaps and respond efficiently to intruders.

The self-locking 2-piece enclosure, built-in bubble level, flexible mounting height, and 3 optional mounting brackets simplify installation and reduce service time.

Sensor data fusion technology uses a software algorithm to gather signals from multiple sensors, including 2 pyroelectric sensors, a room temperature sensor, and a white light level sensor. The microcontroller analyses and compares the sensor data to make alarm decisions.

Meanwhile, Bosch Tri-Focus optics technology uses optics with 3 specific focal lengths, including long-range, middle range and short-range. The detector applies the 3 focal lengths to 86 detection zones, which combine to make 11 solid curtains of detection.

Tri-focus optics technology also includes 2 pyroelectric sensors, which deliver twice

the standard optical gain. The sensors process multiple signals to deliver precise performance virtually free of false alarms.

At the same time, an internal light sensor measures the intensity of light directed at the face of the detector. Sensor data fusion technology uses this information to eliminate false alarms from bright light sources.

The detector automatically adjusts PIR sensitivity to identify human intruders at critical temperatures. Dynamic temperature compensation detects human body heat accurately, avoids false alarms, and delivers consistent catch performance at all operating temperatures.

Other features include cover and wall tamper switch – when an intruder removes the cover or attempts to separate the detector from the wall, a normally closed contact opens to alert the control panel.

The sensor’s LED brightness adjusts automatically to the surrounding light level. A blue light-emitting diode (LED) indicates an alarm condition and activates during a walk test.

And users can enter a command through a keypad, a control center, or programming software to remotely enable or disable the walk test LED. Users can also locally enable or disable the walk test LED through the DIP switch.

Solid-state relays send silent alarm output signals to provide a higher level of security and reliability. An external magnet does not activate the relay. The solid-state relay uses less current than a mechanical relay, providing longer standby capacity during a power loss.

A sealed optic chamber provides immunity to drafts and insects, reducing false alarms. Small animal immunity reduces false alarms caused by animals less than 4.5kg, such as rodents.

A remote self-test initiates when the walk test input switches to its true state. The alarm relay and alarm LED activate for four seconds following a successful test. The trouble relay activates, and the alarm LED flashes following a failed test.

When the power is lower than 8V, a low input power trouble condition activates the trouble relay and causes the LED to flash. The trouble condition clears automatically when power reaches or exceeds 8V.

When the walk test input switches to its true state for less than two seconds, the LED flashes to indicate the most recent trouble condition. If there is no trouble in memory, the LED does not flash. After t hours, or after the detector receives a second walk test pulse for 2 seconds or less, the LED stops flashing and the trouble memory clears.

Protecting Major Venues Against Terror Attacks – Is Reaction the Best Form of Action?

Protecting Major Venues Against Terror Attacks – As the security manager of a large sporting venue in Australia open to tens of thousands of members of the public, terrorist attacks and thwarted attacks against large gatherings in Austria, Paris, Belgium, Iraq, Pakistan, NZ, the UK, multiple countries in Africa, and many more, keep us awake at night.

Legacy wisdom seems to rely on fast response to an attack almost as the pinnacle of ‘proactive response’, while operationally things continue very much as they have done before. Obviously, the challenges are acute at many levels – carried bombs, firearms, edged weapons, incendiaries – it’s hard to detect these in controlled spaces, let alone on Grand Final Day. Is fast reaction the best form of action? Or could technology allow us to do more?

A: Protecting the public side of a security system is a tough ask, there’s no doubt. Consider that in Belgium, the bombers were on the public side of the airport terminal. And there are other variables. The planned attacks against concerts in Austria and elsewhere involved security officers – that asks security providers deep and challenging questions about vetting.

Simple bag checks are a big one – in Paris it was basic bag checks that thwarted 3 of the bombers at the Stade de France and saved many lives. Meanwhile, in Baghdad, a failure of checks led to the bombing of a football match. And the Stade de France incident also suggested it is better to keep attackers outside – it’s easier and safer for the public to run in all directions.

Response to terror attacks at big venues is something that needs to be planned and communicated to security staff. It’s also worthwhile informing the public – perhaps best done during quiet game days at a stadium or when they buy tickets – so that those fans in the crowd who know the drill can communicate it to those around them in the event of an incident.

A well-led security team supported by video surveillance operationally interlocked with police and other agencies, including emergency response teams is vital. If entry points can be limited, then armed police presence at entry points lends greater deterrence as well as improved ability to respond to incidents in real time.

Recent thwarted attacks on concerts in Europe highlight the adjacent importance of intelligence gathering in this case the CIA uncovered a complex plot to kill thousands of concert-goers in Vienna and elsewhere, and informed Austrian authorities.

Things like metal detection and explosives detection can also be applied randomly or in the event of suspicious behaviour. Controlling the distribution of hazardous substances and weapons in the community is another key aspect of protection that is central to, yet beyond the purview of security managers. It’s something powerful coalitions of organisations must take to government to drive legislation.

When it comes to using technology at a front line, there are new AI-powered sensing solutions that will variously detect explosives, metal weapons, flammables and more. The process of screening involves expensive hardware and software, and opponents might argue it moves vulnerable waiting crowds further back from the border of the sterile zone.

That said, we think the MCG’s new AI metal detection system is a worthy answer – it’s a very fast processing solution for weapons – so fast that it mitigates crowd build-up. There’s still vulnerability – it’s impossible to avoid it – but from the point of view of venue security operations, this solution has considerable merit that makes the cost-benefit analysis well worthwhile.

When considering these sorts terror threats, it’s difficult to avoid feeling the problem stems from the fact different groups of human beings justify, aggrandise, tolerate or sanction violence against other groups. Vociferous rejection of exhortations to violence, wherever these may be found, should be a fundamental mission of security and law enforcement professionals everywhere.
